Established in 1882 but with a collecting history dating back to the 1750s, the Princeton University Art Museum is one of the leading research museums in the country. Its encyclopedic collections span from ancient to contemporary art, and include Chinese bronzes and calligraphy, Roman ceramics and mosaics, Maya ceramics, African beadwork and sculpture, old master prints and drawings, European and American paintings, sculpture, and works on paper, and outstanding examples of photography from its earliest years to the present. Beautifully illustrated with masterpieces from all areas of the collections, including numerous recent acquisitions, this revised and expanded handbook includes informative descriptive texts on each work written by the museum’s curatorial staff and guest authors. Among the many featured highlights are a rare bound set of Albrecht Dürer’s engravings of the Passion; a pair of ancient Chinese tomb guardian figures; important paintings by Claude Monet, John Singer Sargent, and Andy Warhol; and photographs representing the medium’s major movements and historical trends. Many new acquisitions are also featured, including a third-century B.C. Etruscan bronze cista with engraved decorations of the Dioscuri and the Judgment of Paris; an exceptional twelfth-century Korean celadon ewer; and a spectacular beaded royal Yoruba tunic. With over 450 illustrations, this handsomely produced guide to the collections provides the most up-to-date and detailed look at the museum’s extensive holdings and its fascinating history.… (más)
