Recommended: Recommended for Riordan enthusiasts
Riordan fans who have read previous books in the Kane Chronicles will enjoy this adaptation, rife with action set pieces, love triangles, magic, and humor. Unfortunately, Riordan’s blockbuster writing style doesn’t quite translate well into a single graphic novel volume. So much happens on each individual page that panels become a confusing and frustrating jumble of busy action and even busier word balloons. Plot points and new characters frequently get lost in the chaos, and this reader didn’t have the time or focus to appreciate the story’s diverse and likeable cast. Fans of the book series will be most likely to enjoy this adaptation, but you may as well point them to the original book instead. ( )
