In 1989, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the opening of the Eastern Block ended the 'short twentieth century' (Eric Hobsbawm). The publication 1989 attempts no sociohistorical categorization of the twenty years since the end of the bipolar world, but rather investigates the ciphers, metaphors and metonymies connected with the decline of a system and the following political upheaval, and explores such concepts and phenomena as bureaucracy, treason, surveillance, nostalgia, violence, manipulation and irony. Like a prism, 1989 reflects the facets and aspects of contemporary realities of life and unfolds the emotional interior of the age of extremes. Published on the occasion of the major exhibition 1989: The End of History or Beginning of the Future? at Kunsthalle Wien (Vienna) October 2009 - February 2010. German text.
