Combining history with culture, the ocean with exploration, and risk with triumph-this rich offering is the only picture book account of Thor Heyerdahl's world-famous Kon-Tiki expedition, during which he sailed a raft 5,000 miles from the coast of South America to the islands of the South Pacific. Author Deborah Kogan Ray clearly and succinctly sets up how Norwegian anthropologist Heyerdahl became convinced that ancient Peruvians arrived in the South Pacific via raft, why he wanted to re-create the voyage, and how he planned for it. She uses primary-source quotations on each spread to shore up the factual history of the events portrayed in the book. Her illustrations add emotion to this harrowing journey.… (más)

Really interesting story about a little-known theory and voyage.

Note: I received a digital review copy through NetGalley. ( )

This book is an autobiography of the life and journey of Thor Heyerdahl. This book covers the exciting journey that was taking across the pacific ocean on a wooden raft, the kno-tiki that "captured the imagination of people all around the world". This book not only allows for the reader to gain knowledge, but gain an insight on the notion that dreams and things that seem unimaginable can come true. ( )

This book I would use in upper-level elementary school because of the word use and how long the picture book is. I would use this book as an independent reading book for a student who wanted to read a realistic fantasy and was being put down on their dream. The theme of this book is about never giving up even when others say it's impossible.
Realistic Fantasy
Use: to learn vocabulary about the kon tiki culture and to inspire never give up on your dreams. ( )
