The protagonist creates a garden with her grandmother, and the reader sees all that's going on both above the earth and below it. Beautiful illustrations and alternative perspectives beautifully weave together a whole picture of a garden.

This a great story book that illustrates and follows a little girl and her nana as they work in their large garden. The book is lyrical with the continues use with the words up and down. They explore and and discuss the creatures that wonder up and down the garden. In science I can use this to identify which type of creatures you can find in the ecosystem of the garden. Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt, has been recognized on the Wisconsin State Reading Association Picture This! list and has been awarded the Giverny Award, which awards children's science pictures books. I love these books so much (Over and Under the Snow, etc.) for their blend of story and natural science. Back matter includes information about each animal and insect featured in the text - useful for grown-up gardeners as well! ( )

Kate Messner talks about the bugs who help with the job of making compost, chickens who eat the weeds, the planting of seeds the bees, and a little girl who loves spending time with her nana, gardening.
