I love this book. It is about a little boy who wants to find the perfect present for his mother. Animals are offering their suggestions to the little boy but his mother already has those things. He eventually finds Mr. bear who gives him a unique gift for his mother. I like this book because it is something may children can relate to while also allowing children to become stronger readers since the little boy Danny asks the animals the same things as well as he always go off with the same animals. Overall, this story is amazing at keeping the patterns the same and words the same just changing animals but the pictures help. I'm excited to use this in my classroom. ( )

Summary:

Ask Mr. Bear is about a little boy who strives to find the perfect birthday present for his mother. In this story animals can talk so they offer their suggestion of the perfect gift, but he realizes his mother already has those gifts that the animals are offering to give. The cow then suggests that Danny go ask Mr. Bear. Finally, the bear presents Danny with a special unique gift for his mother.

Personal Reaction:

I wish I could relate in a sense that I could speak with animals, but I can relate to Danny in trying to find the perfect gift for my mother. It was her birthday that I was trying to figure out what gift should I get her. When it hit me that she wanted a nice necklace that she was hinting, but never told anybody up front. I purchased the gift and when I presented to her she was so shocked, because she did not believe that we were paying attention to her hints.

Classroom Extensions:

1. Assign an activity for the children to come up with something that they can present to their mother on any given day to show their love and appreciation to their mother.
2. Create a fun animal day that they can dress up as any animal that they would like to be if they could. ( )

Summary:
A bit of an older book, Ask Mr. Bear tells a lot without a whole lot. Rather, it simply just tells a story without a lot of "flashy" things. Danny is looking for a present for his mother's birthday, and after asking a group of farm animals, he is advised to seek the counsel of a bear that lives in the woods. After talking to the bear, he runs home and gives his mother a large "bear" hug as her present.

Personal Reaction:
I like how this simply teaches that a gift given from the heart and given with love is the best type of gift. It also reminded me of when I was younger, and when I didn't have any money, sometimes the only present I could give was a hug. Incredibly adorable read, in my opinion. Something that the more younger grades might like.

Classroom Extension: Students could write about a time they gave someone a gift. Also, while the story is being read, students could enjoy a "beary" nice snack. (Like Teddy Grahams or animal crackers). ( )
