Exploration of the forces that have shaped how Australians see themselves since Gallipoli. Surveys 20th-century cultural production and a succession of national icons, including the diggers, and multicultural, indigenous, and queer Australia. Concludes that the vision of national identity presented in the annual Sydney gay and lesbian Mardi Gras parade intersects with traditional Australian iconography to suggest an alternative future. Includes illustrations, endnotes, references and index. Author is a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Western Sydney who has written on reconciliation, queer theory and digger-nationalism.
