A new collection of delightfully macabre tales from a master of horror manga. An old wooden mansion that turns on its inhabitants. A dissection class with a most unusual subject. A funeral where the dead are definitely not laid to rest. ( )

The stories in this graphic novel horror collection were hit and miss, but overall I enjoyed it. I've heard this is one of his weaker works, so it turned out better than I expected.

Futon: This is the first of two stories that feature the young married couple Sonoka and Tomio. Tomio claims he sees some sort of demons in the house they recently moved into and refuses to look out from under the covers out of fear.

Wooden Spirit: If this is your first foray into Ito's work, this is where you'll realize what strange ideas he has. It starts out normal enough: a family is proud of their house, which recently became recognized as a nationally recognized historic building. One day, a woman who seems uncommonly interested in the house shows up.

Tomio - Red Turtleneck: Yes, that's the title. Faithless Tomio gets involved with a woman who turns out to be a witch. That leads to a story reminiscent of "The Green Ribbon," which a lot of people have probably read from the Alvin Schwartz collection (In a Dark, Dark Room and Other Scary Stories). This is one of the more memorable ones.

Gentle Goodbye: I think this is the best of the collection. It's sort of a twist on the haunted house story. It's less outright horror and closer to creepy psychological horror. A newly married woman moves in with her in-laws and discovers a strange family ritual.

Dissection-chan: This isn't really my kind of horror, so it was just okay for me. I think I was missing something about the end.

Blackbird: I haven't read or seen a horror story like this before, so it felt unique. Kume encounters a wounded young man near a trailhead. He was mysteriously able to survive for a month, but how...?

Magami Nanakuse: This was one of the longer stories and also my least favorite. Everything about this made me cringe--sometimes in good ways, but mostly in ways that just made it not for me. A young woman over-idolizes an author. Inspired by that author, she has decided to be a writer too, and now has a chance to meet the famous author. I feel like it ends up being a lot more goofy than scary.

Whispering Woman: This started off well, but the end was a let down. I was expecting something more interesting given that the set up (a nanny is hired to take care of a girl who can't make even the smallest decisions and constantly asks for approval to do anything) is itself pretty interesting. Pretty good solid horror stories with classic twist-type endings with bizarre monsters, gore, and morbidity galore! ( )
