Eric Metaxas’s book Miracles is inspiring, wonderful and informative text. The author succeeds in explaining the intricacies about miracles. A reader can’t help to be struck by the scope that Metaxas so carefully covered of such an important topic. It will definitely make good reading for believers and non-believers alike. With the preponderance of evidence it’s hard to imagine how readers could still end up disbelieving in miracles.
This awe-inspiring work introduced the multiplicity of variables that coalesced for there to be life on earth. Metaxas did a superb job in describing this mind-boggling miracle. Miracles central to his focus were the feeding of five-thousand, the raising of Lazarus from the dead, and Jesus Christ’s resurrection. The author went on to describe why these miracles were authentic.
Metaxas wrote that conversion doesn’t necessarily happen instantly, but might take years like that of Christian theologian C.S. Lewis. He gave examples of evangelist Benny Hinn’s healing of Lutheran pastor Paul Teske. In Ghana, Simon’s foot was miraculously healed by an angel in disguise. Juanita’s allergies to nuts revealed her inner healing was linked to physical healing. And after an abortion April’s sins were forgiven by God.
The author showed how unexplained circumstances caused Lisa to mend her broken marriage. Peter saw angels at Saint Thomas’s Fifth Avenue Church. And Elisa wasn’t going to die. An angel saw John and his two companions safely to Canton, China. Kimberly’s keys magically appeared on the windshield of her car after her nanny prayed with her. Ken and his father Larry sang songs to connect together with God in different places. A phone call saved Mark’s life. And God showed Larry on a flight to South America how he was one of second chances.
Mr. Smith was set free for Dietrich von Hildebrand’s soul to act on Lily’s behalf. Andy recovered from a motorcycle accident and made a trip to heaven. Brad experienced the supernatural when he prayed for his pastor. Lolita escaped being killed in the Twin Towers on 9/11. Metaxas reminded us that Jesus Christ explained that we ought to enter through the narrow gate, for wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction. ( )

Since the book has a number of reviews, I'll concentrate on
my thoughts of the material.
Part I (The Question Of Miracle) addresses what IS a miracle.
The science behind Is Life A Miracle? and Miracle Of The Universe
is profoundly explained and has elements that would appeal to the scientist and the ordinary reader.
I found this section poses and answers some "universal" questions.

Part II (The Miracle Stories) presents stories of miracles under the
headings of conversion, healing, inner healing, angelic, varieties of miracles and touching eternity...very interesting.

Concluding, Eric Metaxes suggests we consider how miracles can change our lives.
I found the read spiritually and scientifically profound.
It was moving, insightful and perhaps best of all, thought provoking.

This is a relatively short book on the subject of miracles written from a Christian perspective. I expected it to be apologetic in nature but actually found it encouraging to Christians. It is MUCH shorter than Craig Keener's 2 volume by the same name.
While not as "must read" as this authors book of Bonhoeffer or even his biography on William Wilberforce, I do recommend to all. ( )

This book resonated for me not so much around the purported miracles described but for its persistent and hopeful message that God continues to break through the fabric of eternity to remind us of His presence in our lives. I was reminded that there is, in our very secular society, a vibrant group of learned, wise and seasoned believers spreading light and the message of the Good News to all who have ears to hear. Uplifting. Note on the Kindle edition: rather more typos than I would have expected to find. Also, you cannot toggle back from the notes to the text and the font size of the notes is unnecessarily small. ( )
