Jim strizzo gli occhi in direzione del sole. Riusciva a
vedere Jack pedalare così veloce che gli uccelli volavano via
al suo passaggio. Ancora pochi secondi e sarebbe passato
sotto il ponte di Holland Transit, un monolite di
cemento e acciaio. Un paio di automobili lo stavano
attraversando, lassù, ma sotto c'erano ombre così profonde e
scure che facevano male agli occhi.
Si alzò sui pedali e spinse con tutte le sue forze.
Quando sollevò di nuovo lo sguardo, Jack non c'era più.


Allora, cosa dire di questo libro? E' stato una delusione, quello è sicuro. Mi aspettavo molto (molto, molto, molto) di più.
La storia segue Jim Jr., un ragazzino che vive col padre Jim. Il padre è ossessionato dalla sicurezza, ha paura che il pericolo si nasconda in ogni dove e che Jim Jr. faccia la fine di Jack. Jim Jr. comincia a notare delle stranezze, che lo porteranno a scoprire cosa è successo a suo zio Jack ancora ragazzino e che lo faranno cambiare da ragazzino un po' sfigato a Trollhunter.
A parte una lunga serie di cliché e vari errori di battitura nella traduzione che danno piuttosto fastidio, la scrittura è abbastanza semplice e il libro scorre veloce, anche se io personalmente l'ho trovato un po' noioso. La storia è narrata da Jim Jr. in prima persona, dandoci una lettura più "profonda" del personaggio.
Una nota interessante è stata la parte di "storia", riguardante i Cacciatori di Troll e i Troll stessi dalle origini fino ad ora: come erano i Troll, cosa li ha portati in America, i diversi tipi di queste creature, perché sono dovuti nascere i Cacciatori e perché ora non ce ne sono più molti. Scopriamo anche cosa ha causato la scomparsa dei bambini durante quella che viene chiamata l' "Epidemia dei Cartoni del Latte" e perché anche lo zio Jack è stato preso. Poi, però... Noia mortale. Tutto troppo ovvio, almeno per me, e i personaggi hanno poco spessore o proprio nulla. Diciamo che salvo Jim Jr. e Claire, forse anche Jack, ma gli altri non mi hanno lasciato nulla. Per quanto riguarda Tub, ho sperato fino all'ultimo che venisse mangiato.
AAARGH!!! aveva del potenziale e non mi sento di scartarla, però a volte le vengono dati pronomi maschili, a volte femminili, che se i personaggi sanno che è una femmina di Troll. Boh, probabilmente una svista della traduttrice, che comunque confonde.
C'è da dire che è interessante la scelta dei Troll, in contrasto con le cose che troviamo ultimamente in questo genere di lettura (leggi: vampiri e licantropi, come se esistessero solo loro...).
Il romanzo ha quelle caratteristiche essenziali che hanno i libri per ragazzi, come la scoperta di sé, che si vede bene attraverso il cambiamento di Jim Jr.
L'ambientazione è un po' "meh", nel senso che mi aspettavo qualcosa di più horror, e magari descritto meglio, e invece no.
So che questa dovrebbe essere una serie, quindi spero che nel prossimo libro le cose migliorino. Il primo non è bocciato, ma poteva essere migliore.

I received this book as an e-ARC. I found the beginning full of promise, but also found the rest of the story did not captivate or hold my attention as I thought it might. That said, Middle aged readers who enjoy darker, gorier fiction may enjoy the dark mystery. I did not hate it, but it is also not my normal preferred genre. ( )

Good read, especially for tweens and teen-aged males. Lots of action, goo, sewage and the killing of disgusting enemies. With berserk lawnmowers, hidden doors, bridges to other worlds and named swords, there is plenty here to interest young men who can try to figure out the gaps in the story line. The main character's father had been separated from his brother, who had been dragged into the realms of trolls to help battle the worst of the troll breeds. Becoming paranoid, the father tries to protect his home and son, but his boy is also dragged into the underworld of warring trolls who fatten up and dine off young students. There he meets his kidnapped uncle, who never aged and is still a boy, although a mighty warrior.

Much of the dry humor seen in Hellboy is here as well, and most of the scenes can be easily visualized. Some of the visual goo is described well, but contributing descriptions such as sounds, smells and the feel of the action dealing with troll intestines and other goo were not as well done. Much of the book deals with visual descriptions, which seems more of being a description of a television show than an action novel.

While I found the book interesting, some parts of it were a drag, and the action seemed to be disjointed and chaotic. It appears that the book was written in sections on a computer, and in-expertly sewn together. One of the plot points is that there is an emergency so intense and timeline so short, that the characters aren't able to tell the main character what is going on. This drags the book along, and is annoying to the reader. Better editing would have helped.

On the whole, I recommend this book for young men who like action stories and the darker sides of life and teen aged relations. Those who like the Walking Dead, Hellboy and werewolves will probably like this book. I also recommend it for school and public libraries as well. ( )

For middle school youth who devoured series like Gregor the Overland or Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Troll Hunters can serve as a bridge to young adult literature. While not outstanding, this dark fantasy is likely to attract enough followers to become a series.
