Ho letto questo romanzo ad aprile, ma mi trovo a scrivere la recensione solo adesso. Il motivo è presto detto: mi sforzo sempre di non fare spoiler nelle mie recensioni, perché l'idea è anche quella di dare dritte a chi mi segue (e di solito chi non ha letto un libro non vuole sentirselo raccontare per filo e per segno). Ecco, il fatto è che non sapevo come scrivere questa recensione senza fare spoiler, o forse ero troppo sottosopra per poter buttare giù qualcosa di sensato: non è detto che ci riesca adesso, ma vediamo un po' cosa viene fuori.

The Shadows, come da titolo, è incentrato sulle due Ombre che abbiamo conosciuto come compari inseparabili di Rehv: l'incasinato Trez e il silenzioso iAm. Del primo conosciamo già la futura compagna, l'Eletta Selena, mentre quella di iAm la incontreremo qui per la prima volta.

Trez e Selena sono una coppia fantastica e, caso raro nei libri di Zia Ward, ci si affeziona più a lei che a lui. Per sua stessa ammissione, la Ward è più brava quando si cimenta con personaggi maschili, ma questa volta è Selena la regina del romanzo. La sua forza e la sua vitalità scuotono l'esistenza di Trez, da sempre concentrato sulla fuga, sia dai suoi obblighi sia dagli affetti. È così inviluppato nel suo dramma personale da non riuscire più a vedere il dolore negli altri (iAm in testa) e Selena è proprio la scossa di realtà che gli ci voleva per uscire dal suo impasse.

Proprio per questo ho apprezzato molto la decisione finale dell'autrice. Nell'economia del romanzo, funziona ed è molto più efficace di ogni altra possibile soluzione. Quindi, sebbene la scelta anticonvenzionale, per me Zia Ward ha fatto centro. Di nuovo.

Per quanto riguarda iAm e la sua compagna, lo sviluppo della loro storia è stato inevitabilmente rapido in termini di pagine, ma la Ward ha quel suo modo da vecchia volpe di descrivere lo sviluppo delle relazioni che stordisce il lettore e gli fa apparire superflua una lunga conoscenza reciproca. Perché sì, si può partire da un sesso fantastico, ma ci si conosce con il tempo – e Zia Ward ce lo ha mostrato innumerevoli volte.

Per il resto, ci sono le solite innumerevoli storie parallele (e finché le gestisce così bene, per me puoi aggiungerne quante ne vuole). Rispunta Assail, sempre più disperato e perso, insieme ai suoi inquietanti cugini (che non vediamo l'ora di conoscere meglio), e, in vista del prossimo volume della serie, rileggiamo di nuovo il punto di vista di Rhage (un misto di coglioneria, tenerezza e divertimento puro). La Ward ci presenta anche i due protagonisti dello spin-off della serie (Black Dagger Brotherwood Legacy), Paradise e Craeg, che hanno riscosso il mio favore (e stuzzicato la mia curiosità).

Le novità più consistenti, tuttavia, riguardano Xcor e Layla, tanto da farmi pensare e/o sperare che il quindicesimo romanzo sarà loro dedicato. D'altro canto Layla è incinta da quattro libri... e il suo rapporto con Xcor sembra aver perso le ultime vestigia di ricatto che ancora sembrava avere...

Insomma si aspetta il prossimo romanzo, al quale mancano ancora diversi mesi. Sigh. ( )

Definitely, definitely, definitely one of my favorites in the BDB series. It's real. Raw. Emotional. I must say how I am always enamored with the Warden's writing and how she is so able to keep it out of cliche-city. Just when you expect it to go down one path, because the real path hurts, she keeps it real. And that allows me to really connect with the characters and their story. This world that she's created is one of my favorites to get lost in, but the characters are what keeps me coming back. ( )

DEAR GOD!!!! DO YOURSELF FAVOR! Make sure you have a years supply of Kleenex. This was the saddest thing I have ever read. I cried so hard, it hurt me physically.

My hellren says that just means that JR did a great job. She made me feel IT. ( )

From the first book, Dark Lover, I've been a fan of the BDB. The King seemed to take a new direction and I was very happy to go along the journey. Absolutely loved Lover At Last and now we have the Shadows, literally brothers, as new friends and allies to the Brotherhood.

Seems there's been some confusion about what exactly this book is about.: i'Am and Trez have serious paths to their soulmates,who are both strong females. There's the usual bickering between a few Brothers, new Brother wannabes, a possible war averted, really bad Bad Guys and Girls, and possibly a female Brother wannabe...stay tuned folks, the roller coaster is on the tracks. After the excitement, and, of course, all the brothers adding their two cents, it was nice to see the Shadow brothers getting their HEA.. Yes, the book will introduce new characters, but that's what keeps a series exciting, fresh. These people will add, not take away, from the BDB. If you've been reading from the first, you remember that new people have been added along the way...all leading us to this point. ( )

From the very 1st word to the last, this book moves.
There are no slow parts.
It immediately grabs hold of you & refuses to let go.

I laughed.
I cried.
I soared.

I could not stop reading.

I have read so many of J.R. Ward's books, but this one.........Wow. There are no words to describe it. With this book J.R. Ward has surpassed ALL other reads for me.
Amazing. Superb. Beyond Outstanding.
She deserves an award on this book alone! I cannot say enough about how absolutely Phenomenal this book is.

And yes, you will need tissue, but don't let that stop you from experiencing this book. You will not regret it.

Oh! And be prepared to have your heart completely Annihilated! ( )
