Eila Walker knows luck is not a friend, so she is downright shocked to inherit a million-dollar Cape Cod home. And yeah, her new town isn't perfect: the cheerleaders are heinous clones, the local undertow can kill ya, and her Great Grams was supposedly fried by lightning in the harbor square. Still, Eila is hopeful her luckless days are in the past . . . until history decides to repeat itself. When Raef O'Reilly becomes her friendly, yet weirdly protective shadow, Eila thinks life is pretty darn perfect - until she is hauled beneath the waves by an unnatural undertow. Revealing coal-black eyes and iron-like strength as he rescues her, Raef can no longer hide what he is . . . or what she can do. Eila, last of her kind, can supposedly channel the power of human souls, while Raef is more adept at stealing them. Even worse, the legend about her ancestor isn't such a myth, since Eila's grandmother was one kick-butt warrior until her lightning-like power backfired. A power that is written all over Eila's DNA. Determined to stay one step ahead of a dangerous clan that is hunting her, Raef, along with three unlikely allies, will do all they can to protect her. But as hidden pieces of their brutal histories unravel, Eila begins to understand just what went down in the harbor square. She soon realizes that following in her grandmother's fearless footsteps may be the only way to save those she loves . . . including Raef.… (más)

It should be noted that I received my copy of Undertow through Goodreads Giveaways. This, in no manner, affects my scoring method or review.

Story: 3.75/5
Characters: 4.5/5
Re-read Value: 3.5/5
Overall: 3.9 rounded up to 4 stars

I actually really, really enjoyed this book. I read it almost in one sitting, save for the hour long break I took to cook and eat my dinner. It was great in a manner I wasn't expecting. Actually, I think my favorite part of this book was the characters. I don't really have any specific reason as to why I loved them so much, I just did. They seemed slightly more real than the previous fantasy characters I've read recently.

A character I loved, without a doubt, was Raef. I mean, who wouldn't love a boy who says things like "You have entangled yourself in my heart" and vows to protect his girl with his everything? I mean, wow, that boy can make a girl swoon. Sure, his and Eila's romance was a bit insta-lovey but not to an extent where it wasn't plausible. There was a certain reason and purpose behind their connection the author took the time to insinuate which I appreciated.

Overall, I would say this is a great beginning with a unique concept to the series. I look forward to reading more! ( )

Eila Walker is in danger. She and her guardian, Mae, moved to Eila’s ancestral home in Cape Cod after a mystery donor purchased it for her. Little did Eila know that this charitable act would alter her seemingly normal life forever. After a near death experience of being pushed into the bay and almost being drowned by a Mortis, her new friends who all have secrets themselves, M.J., Ana, Raef and Kian explain about her past and her future.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Undertow is the first instalment in the Undertow series.

I was attracted to the cover and requested it from Netgalley. Then I saw the original cover and part of me regretted requesting it. But then, I saw a whole bunch of very positive reviews and thought that everything would be fine. Only now, I have to write my unpopular opinion on Undertow.

Ella moves to a very big house (that she didn't pay for, but that someone bought for her at an auction, just because her ancestors built it). Now in books and movies moving into big, old houses is very seldom a good idea, moving into one that been gifted to you seems like an even worse idea. It's like walking straight into a trap, being warned. Ella lives with her guardian, because - would you believe it- she no longer has parents. How convenient, even more convenient however is the fact that this guardian just happened to have planned this trip to Europe she's been saving for for years only weeks after moving into the new house. So, now it's time for some Home Alone. What could possibly go wrong there?

But there's even more. Ella meets Raef, the insta-love super handsome guy (who turns out to be an immortal stuck in a teenager's body). Sounds familiar, huh? On a more positive note, it could have been a love-triangle. And Ella gets bullied for no particular reason by the popular girl. In case you would have missed all the foreshadowing, there's a surprise halfway through the book: Ella is not just plain old human, she's special. And so are her new friends. That is convenient. And it might have been interesting, if I had not read too many similar books like that. (Even considering just the last two months or so, the same thing happened in both Faelorehn and The Winter People).

At this point I couldn't really care for the story any more. The writing didn't blow me away either. I don't think I will continue this series. ( )

This novel is a paranormal tale mixed with suspense and mystery. Undertow is a unique paranormal/romance novel. This novel stands out among the YA novels. This novel has humor, action, romance and mystery. The plot twists kept me guessing. I got lost in the world K.R. Conway created. I can't wait to read the second book Stromfront. ( )

I received a copy from Netgalley.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one. It had everything I look for in a YA paranormal romance. A great start that captured my attention right off an immensely likeable female lead. Eila had a great personality and likeable tone (if a little snarky) which made me connect with her right off. (One of the best bits in the book is an incident fairly early on in the story when she holds her own against a right bitch of a cheerleader).

Eila moves to a new town under some fairly strange circumstances in gaining her new home and right off makes some friends and develops a crush on a hot boy. While that scenario in itself is nothing new in YA paranormal romance the way the story moves forward was well plotted and engaging.

Extremely well written, with a great cast of characters, and a no insta-love! A romance that builds throughout and becomes quite enveloping. And a good unique paranormal element. Not going into details due to spoilers.

That you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me access to view the title. A great read highly recommended.

And another square crossed off for Bookish BIngo - a YA book. ( )

Beware the Depths...
**** 4 out of 5 stars
Review by: Stacy Palm

I really do enjoy reading "Young Adult" books. I'm not sure if it is because the drama of that age, the heightened emotion, or simply the art of characters finding their footing in the world. Because I enjoy them I tend to not only read them, but find myself at the library's YA section frequently and may even eves drop from time to time on the conversations of bookish teens surrounding me. I try not to think so much about their point of view while reading these books, as I enjoy getting lost in my own mind, but I consider their perspective once I've finished a book.

Undertow is a considerably readable book. It has a pace that draws you in at the beginning and keeps you riveted to the story without giving away too much too soon. This is an important quality in a book for me because no one wants to know what's going on right from the get-go. I like to ponder options, question where the writer is taking us, and get excited by the possibility of going somewhere new. The author does a fantastic job of making the unbelievable, believable. She weaves together a story about a young girl who moves to Cape Cod under mysterious circumstances, and in no time at all she is surrounded by a few good friends and a troubling undercurrent of things lying under the surface that start to become part of her new reality.

I liked the cast of characters, particularly MJ and Ann, who add a bit of sullen humor to this book. Raef as the leading love interest was a bit of a throw-away for me. He didn't seem to have as much depth as I wanted him to for the history that his character provides to the story. The one thing I can truly say that I was slightly disappointed in by this book was that the whole time that the mystery at the center was being developed I was intrigued and mystified as to what was going on. I started thinking maybe mermaids were involved or something a bit less commercialized in a mountain of other books. So when I did find out what creatures lie beneath, I was a bit disappointed in the familiarity. However, I still thought this was a really good book and one that will be enjoyed by many.
