Nadia Bolz-Weber weaves personal narrative, hilarious rants and powerful spiritual insight as she relates her unusual journey of faith, offering a fresh and uncompromising look at the transformative power of grace. As one of today's most provocative Christian leaders, she blends sardonic irreverence and brilliant theology to offer a portrait of faith that is edgy, outrageous and, above all, real.Smart-mouthed and heavily tattooed, Nadia Bolz-Weber didn't consider herself 'religious leader material' and didn't expect to find her vocation leading a funeral in a smoky, downtown comedy club. But surrounded by recovering alcoholics, depressives, and comedians, she realized these were her people and maybe she was meant to be their pastor. Bringing together the bracing and beautiful, this revised updated edition reminds us that we need the grace of a loving, forgiving God now more than ever. Please note this book is published under the title 'Pastrix' in certain territories.… (más)

The author talks openly about her strictly religious childhood, her descent into alcoholism in her teens, and her surprising redemption, in every sense of the word, surrounded by others who were even more wounded and confused than she was...

The writing is good, the stories unexpected, often moving. The author is honest about her failings and doubts, and manages to present Jesus in a way that is very appealing. I’m not surprised that so many people find her style and teaching so attractive.

Each chapter tells a different story. It’s peppered with down-to-earth language and some obscenities, which I could have done without; yet I understand her need to be transparent, and to write the kinds of words she uses. Perhaps, for the ‘irregular’ parts of her congregation, strong language is a bridge to communication.

I would recommend it for Christians, for those who long for acceptance and have not yet found it, and perhaps most of all for those who are inclined to write the church off as feeble and irrelevant.

Well worth reading. Just be warned that there is seriously strong language used throughout. ( )

Cranky, Beautiful Faith is a book of reality and honesty – of leadership, of church life and of faith itself. It is a narrative of Nadia’s life, her battles, her faith and the life of House of All Sinners and Saints, what the back cover blurb describes as a “mission church” in Denver.

It covers Nadia’s background, her call to ministry when she knew she was being called to be a ‘Pastor to her People’ – such an amazing and powerful call – and the journey that ensues.

Each chapter is as well as part of the story of the church, an illustration of a bible passage, something that seems to just follow naturally. It is totally honest, gutsy and inspiring. Nadia is not afraid to share the struggles of growing a church – and the reality of the failures. Throughout there is an honesty of her own battles of emotions of what she’s feeling and what she knows she should think, and the work God is doing in her. This offered me both encouragement and hope!

This book is inspiring and a real vision for how church can and should be – a place of real welcome for all. ( )
