This book is a guide to artist-run projects, sites, resources, festivals, and other arts organizing happening in the United States. It also makes a place for artists who act in the role of independent, creative organizer to generate dialog specific to operating on a grass-roots, autonomous level. The opportunities these organizers provide range from exhibitions in apartment living rooms, micro-grants, publications, nomadic residencies, film and video screenings in unconventional locations, and a variety of other programming that challenges traditional formats for the production and reception of art. A vibrant and vital art world would be unimaginable without these opportunities, but despite the fact that these programs offer most—if not all—ground floor support for artists, they often operate with very little to no funding and resources beyond sweat equity, volunteer labor, and personal savings.
