The art and literature of ancient Egypt are set in erotic works that radiate a rare charm and beauty. During the period of dynastic rule in Egypt, when the pharaohs were the rulers of Egypt and were considered to be gods, orgies that would not fall short of the stories of The Arabian Nights, The Decameron, and the Kama Sutra combined took place in their palaces. Even so, we only have a small portion of the abundant erotic works - poetry, literature, painting and sculpture - that were created in Egypt. Papyri inscribed with erotica were destroyed, and only a small number of fragments survived. The same is true for sculptures and etchings. El-Qhamid, a librarian at the Archeological Institute of Cairo, has collected fragments of ancient Egyptian erotica for twenty years. In parallel, Joseph Toledano has collected quotations of and testimonies to Egyptian erotica from sources that were not Egyptian - the Bible, for instance. The combination of these two scholars' work presents the reader, for the first time, with an accurate picture of the ancient Egyptian erotic world in fragments of poetry and literature and in magnificent color pictures and detailed drawings.
