"From the bestselling author of Crow Planet, a compelling journey into the secret lives of the wild animals at our back door. In The Urban Bestiary, acclaimed nature writer Lyanda Lynn Haupt journeys into the heart of the everyday wild, where coyotes, raccoons, chickens, hawks, and humans live in closer proximity than ever before. Haupt's observations bring compelling new questions to light: Whose 'home' is this? Where does the wild end and the city begin? And what difference does it make to us as humans living our everyday lives? In this wholly original blend of science, story, myth, and memoir, Haupt draws us into the secret world of the wild creatures that dwell among us in our urban neighborhoods, whether we are aware of them or not. With beautiful illustrations and practical sidebars on everything from animal tracking to opossum removal, The Urban Bestiary is a lyrical book that awakens wonder, delight, and respect for the urban wild, and our place within it"--… (más)

A fun read with lots of trivia, plus some ideas about being a good neighbor. ( )

Really liked this book. Wonderful stories and information about creatures that live with us in urban areas. The last two or three chapters weren't so great, though. ( )

This book will make you aware of the beasties in your own neighborhood. My only wish is that the publisher had added some more illustrations or photos. Some of the critters discussed I will have to look up online to get a real sense of what they look like. ( )

Intriguing look at the animals that are found in cities and suburban areas. It reminded me to look for animals even in heavily populated areas. ( )

[b: The Urban Bestiary|17333244|The Urban Bestiary Encountering the Everyday Wild|Lyanda Lynn Haupt|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1364181383s/17333244.jpg|24064548] is a wonderful look at not only the myriad of wildlife that live at the edges and within our cities and suburbia, but also a philosophical study of what such softening of borders between the 'wild' and 'urban' might mean for both us and the wildlife in question. [a: Lyanda Lynn Haupt|16810|Lyanda Lynn Haupt|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1248017975p2/16810.jpg] makes a wonderful case for a change in our own perception - that we ourselves are animals and that coexistance or better husbandry is a far better answer than eradication of wildlife - and even provides a plethora of ideas of just how to coexist and foster a better understanding of the creatures we share our lives, and sometimes unwittingly our homes, with.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and the depths to which it goes to inform the reader about the animals in questions. Haupt does an admirable job of combining the scientific and mythical, anecdotes and folk-wisdom. Each entry within her bestiary offered me not only a new view of common creatures, but also a further understanding of them and myself.

I look forward to reading more of Haupt's work, as well as immersing myself within the rather thorough biography in the back of this book. It's no wonder our local wildlife rehabilitation center proudly carries this volume on their reference shelves. ( )
