Odd. I found it a little creepy that the boy is almost as happy with a scarecrow Kate as he would be with his friend. It makes the feminist in me feel objectified. Of course, I'm sure that's not the author's intent; she probably thought she was inspiring kids to use their imagination and to salvage joy from disappointment.

I chose this book because I have a good feeling about the author's name... I'm sure I've enjoyed other books by her or by the illustrator.... ( )

This book is about a little boy that wants Kate to come over and play and thinks of all the activities they can do together (hide-n-seek, swing, feed, his mouse, wear funny hats, build a house, etc.). But as is begins to rain, Kate is not allowed to come out and play anymore. The little boy is disappointed and has to play all alone. He makes a fake Kate and dresses and stuffed doll to sit on the couch and participate in the activities so he didn't feel lonely. They had a party with all of his toys and cake and ice cream. This is great to read to primary grade students that might feel lonely and learn to entertain themselves on their own. ( )
