Actual rating: 3.5 stars I was originally drawn to this book because of its cover. Yes, I am a huge cover slut, I won't even deny it. But when I read the blurb I was instantly hooked. What I actually received though was not what I was expecting. At all. When I read the summary I thought this book was going to be some sort of dystopian mythology novel but boy was I wrong. It was so horrific and disturbing but I liked it! The book starts out with Cheyenne waking up with her boyfriend (who also happens to be her math teacher O.o) at this strange neighborhood having no memory of how she got there. Now, if this were me red flags would've been going up all over the place. But of course she didn't question this at all and seemed perfectly okay with it! Which brings me to say that I did not like Cheyenne very much. It made me question how she couldn't have noticed how sadistic and psychotic Teo is and what he was doing is not okay. I understood that their relationship was obviously abusive and I know how people in these types relationships often over look the abuse due to their love for the significant other. So part of me understood why Cheyenne didn't finally realize Teo's motives until the end of the novel but the other part of me was just like "No. This is stupid. How can she not see?" so I was very conflicted about this. What also really irked me was the fact that there was this love triangle. Coincidentally, Teo's brother Marcus, happens to like Cheyenne and actually knows about his psychotic ways. So of course, after Cheyenne sees Teo's true personality, she decides that she like Marcus. But aside from this I oddly really enjoyed The Dollhouse Asylum and its creepiness. This pretty much sums things up: "Just because you love someone doesn't mean you should." "I'm not sure which bothers me more: that I actually wanted to be his puppet, or that he clearly enjoys cutting our strings." Again, very conflicted about this book. Part of me loves it while the other hates it. I found myself having dreams about The Dollhouse Asylm. It’s creepy, not necessarily like horror books, but in the fact that it shows how monstrous humans can be. Cheyenne kind of annoyed me at the beginning. She’s very naive and immature. Her character needed that in order to be able to grow throughout the book. Marcus is probably my favorite character. He’s got layers. He is doing his best to play the game, but he has this incredibly sensitive side. He also wants to do whatever he can to get them out of there. Teo is one scary guy. He’s got a twisted mind, and that definitely unsettled me. I enjoyed how it played on some of the most tragic romances in literature. You don’t really understand why until the end. And these poor teens have to go through some intense and terrifying events. Some make it, and some don’t. But the way some of them go is gut wrenching. It’s hard to imagine how a person could be responsible for this neighborhood, and how he can destroy life so easily. That’s what freaks me out about this story. Being inside of the mind of a psychopath. I won’t tell you what happens, or what the story leads to, but I hope you enjoy this story. I’ve been anticipating this book for a long time, and I definitely liked it. It’s more of a suspense/thriller than anything else. It's been a long time since I read a book with such an annoying, whiny, self-centered MC. She was horrible. I didn't like her at all and thought the entire concept was kind of lame. Who just goes with everything they are told and accepts it blindly after being kidnapped and watching other horrible things happen? And then still whines about loving the psycopath who has them captive? Not enjoyable at all for me. I only finished to use it for a reading challenge. And the only reason it gets 2 instead of 1 star is the correct use of lose and loose (finally!) and the way the characters were paired up using romantic couples of literature. garbage - the novel is linguistically so primitive that i had to stop reading it after only three pages. the literary level of a nine-year-old. "i try turning in my flimsy chair" "i try swinging my fists" "It's my Teo, my Teo..." "reminding me of his mouth melting in mine" kids, please, finish school. it makes sense. you try writing a book i tried reading it crap sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
When the world is breaking all someone wants is safety. A virus that had once been contained has returned, and soon no place will be left untouched by its destruction. But when eighteen-year-old Cheyenne wakes up in Elysian Fields-a subdivision cut off from the world and its monster-creating virus-she is thrilled to have a chance at survival. At first, Elysian Fields-with its beautiful houses and manicured lawns-is perfect. Teo Richardson, the older man who stole Cheyenne's heart, built it so they could be together. But when Teo tells Cheyenne there are tests that she and seven other couples must pass to be worthy of salvation, Cheyenne begins to question the perfection of his world. Cheyenne is now "Persphone," and each couple has been re-named to reflect the most tragic romances ever told. Everyone is fighting to pass the test, to remain in Elysian Fields. Teo dresses them up, tells them when to move, how to act, and in order to pass the test, they must play along. If they play it right they'll be safe. But if they play it wrong, they'll die. I had mixed feelings about the book and the story really that I'm not sure how to express it all. It's a book that makes you wonder and think about how people end up doing things they do and making choices from a psychological stand point at least it did for me.
