When I first started reading this book I thought it was going to be about vampires since the opening blurb says that it takes place shortly after Lure of the Dead. There’s even blood drinking in the first few chapters, but slowly I realized that Slither is not a vampire. At least I don’t think he is? I’m still confused. It doesn’t relate to the other books in the series until over halfway through, and even then, it seems a little far-fetched. A quick read, but not sure how the events in this book are going to effect the final two books. ( )

I'm about 1/3 of the way through and I'm frustrated. Why am I reading about this character that has nothing to do with "The Last Apprentice"? Instead of being interested in the mage's world I'm finding myself angry and not caring a bit. I'm all for telling stories that take place in the same world but they shouldn't be part of the main series. A story about Grimalkin was alright she is a major character. Geez, finish the series and then go back and expand the world. *hmpf*
---------------

I'm done. I agree with the above still. The audiobook didn't include the few paragraphs that I found in front of the hardcover (didn't want to skip the awesome artist work so had to get the physical book) which said "... a new darkness is rising.. new creatures, new lands, and new horrors beyond imagination... This is Slither's tale."

Learned a few tidbits that are about the main story. I don't like how Grimalkin has become just so incredibly awesome. It's too much and mostly takes place off page.

I didn't get the poem either.

If this was the first book in the series I never would have continued and know this, I don't just like the series I really love it. Like obsessively love it.

I've listened to the audiobook but I also own the physical book.

Q: Hi joseph. I Just finished spooks blood And i liked it. But before this book i read I am Grimalkin . In my opinion it is not good. I mean something is missing. So next book I will read slithers tale. So What is the reason to write this books? (slithers And grimalkin)And i liked yourself spooks series. Really however did yok read this books. They are Amazing. And one thing i love Alice..
A: The books ‘Slither’ and ‘Grimalkin’ both point towards the new series and lay the foundation of the plot that will unfold there.
---------------------

A: Slither can be read as a stand alone but it is very important to the full Wardstone Chronicle narrative.
---------------------

Q: why you decided to write book 9 and 11 in someone else's point of view than Tom?
A: I wanted Grimalkin to have her own adventure and I thought it would work best if it was told from her point of view. The same is also true of Slither. In each case I wanted to try something different but both books are very important to the full Wardstone Chronicles narrative ( )

11th Last Apprentice book, with Tom Ward completely absent. Slither is a creature of the dark, with a bloodthirst; however, he agrees that upon the death of a local farmer, Slither will save the lives of the two younger daughters in return for selling the oldest into slavery. Along the way, honoring his bargain, Slither has to battle a mage and undefeated warrior before being forced into mortal combat to settle false claims against him. Grimalkin and Slither become unnatural allies, with Grimalkin still guarding the Fiend's head. 3.5 stars. ( )

I read the Joseph Delaney books (Wardstone Chronicles/Last Apprentice Series) out loud with my daughter. We really enjoy them quite a lot... I have to admit though, if you are used to that series you will find this one a very odd ball book amongst the rest.

Rather than following Tom and Old Gregory, or even Grimalkin as another book in the series did (quite well, I thought-- but I really like her), this book focuses on an entity of a type we've never seen. He can change size, is a mage, drinks blood and has a tail. Nope, he's not a human.

It's not a bad book, just VERY different. I'm not going to go further into the specifics to avoid spoilers other than to say, if you are waiting to see if it ever actually ties into the series, *yes*, it does. Towards the middle of the book.

This was enjoyable, but I admit I prefer the adventures of Tom,Old Gregory, Alice and Grimalkin. ( )
