By far the most comprehensive study of Spanish colonial painting in Quito, Ecuador, this bilingual work in English and Spanish represents the painstaking research of a team of art historians under the organization of Judy de Bustamante. A welcome addition to the series "Early Modern Catholicism of the Visual Arts," it makes available for the first time an impressive corpus of pictorial material from public and private collections discussed in detail in a catalogue raisonne format. As indicated in the preface, "[The authors] wanted to make available to both the general reader and scholars the very best of the paintings created in and around Quito from the end of the 16th century to around 1825 in the form of a virtual exhibition catalog, in which each work of art is beautifully illustrated and accompanied by explanatory text. The scholars who would contribute the texts - Carmen Ferna ndez-Salvador, Angel Justo Estebaranz, Andrea Lepage, Adriana Pacheco Bustillos, and Suzanne L. Stratton-Pruitt - were advised to jettison obvious errors of attribution and chronology, which unfortunately meant some cherished traditional attributions have been reassigned to 'anonymous'."] Despite the omission of mural painting, the selection of 88 paintings included in the catalog features representative works by renowned European and native-born artists such as Pedro Gocial, Angelino Medoro, Bernardo Bitti, Pedro de Vargas, Pedro Bedo n, Mateo Mexi a, Miguel de Santiago, and Nicola s Javier Gori bar, as well as numerous anonymous works of exceptional beauty. Fine quality color plates (often covering an entire page) were selected out of 231 works that were photographed for the book, with the best equipment available today.
