Mythology. Romance. Young Adult Fiction. HTML:Fans of Amanda Hocking's novel, Wake, will dive into this paranormal romance featuring mermaidsâ??the killer kindâ??and won't come up for air!

Calder White lives in the cold, clear waters of Lake Superior, the only brother in a family of murderous mermaids. To survive, Calder and his sisters prey on humans and absorb their positive energy. Usually, they select their victims at random, but this time around, the underwater clan chooses its target for a reason: revenge. They want to kill Jason Hancock, the man they blame for their mother's death.
It's going to take a concerted effort to lure the aquaphobic Hancock onto the water. Calder's job is to gain Hancock's trust by getting close to his family. Relying on his irresistible good looks and charm, Calder sets out to seduce Hancock's daughter Lily. Easy enough, but Calder screws everything up by falling in loveâ??just as Lily starts to suspect there's more to the monster-in-the-lake legends than she ever imagined, and just as the mermaids threaten to take matters into their own hands, forcing Calder to choose between them and the girl he loves.
One thing's for sure: whatever Calder decides, the outcome won't be pretty.
"Riveting! A cold-blooded tale of secrets, revenge, and forbidden love that will leave you terrified to go in the water."â??Gretchen McNeil, author of Possess

"Scary and spooky . . . I really enjoyed reading this."â??USA Today
"A haunting tale of revenge and romance."â??Justine Magazine

The second half was much better than the first; it really saved it for me. A solid 4 stars

EDIT: Review also available on my baby blog!

This is my first try at a mermaid book and it was good! Eeevil mermaids, but still, I liked it a lot.

Calder is a merman. Gifted with good looks and easy charm, he can effortlessly prey on young naive girls and feed on their energy to survive. Leaving his older sisters, he wanders alone by the islands and the oceans watching for his next victims, but things weren’t at their best. Many years ago, his mother was brutally killed by a human and now, only taking his life will quench the fire of revenge in their hearts. Or so his sisters keep telling him. He knows that something doesn’t feel right, especially when they try to find him and inform him of the plan they had in mind.

He is totally messed up and confused, he doesn’t know what to follow, his heart or his mind; too blinded by claiming their revenge, his loyalty to his sisters and the strong bond they had, his heartbreak over his mother’s death… he couldn’t see the wrongness of the plan they concocted and his part in it, until he met the target: Lily, the grand-daughter of the murderer and got to know her and then started falling for her.

My impressions:

Best parts: when Calder was wrestling with the dueling loyalties: the promise they kept to their mother, or his newfound love for Lily.

It was at first very creepy the way he was stalking her non-stop, it felt like reading Midnight Sun and being in Edward Cullen’s head, and let me tell you that’s not pleasant. Not. One. Bit.
But as the story progressed, and Calder let go of the pull his sisters had on him, he became more human, more sensitive, his feelings for Lily made him a better man.

Impala baby! God! how I love that car, and it was a nice add, I couldn’t help but feel some Supernatural touch in the story, is the author a fan of the show? Or am I an overly obsessed fangirl? I’m curious about both.

Some things made me cringe; like Tallulah’s feelings for Calder, and Calder’s description of Pavati; but somewhere along the road, the whole thing was explained, and it added another trait to the story, some fear edges and it fed the vengeance plot and made it all interesting by the end.

The romance started in a weird way because of the stalking, but Lily wasn’t a TSTL she was strong and wasn’t afraid to speak her mind and tell him that he creeped her out, that he needed to stay away from her. Her stubbornness made him realize that he was doing it wrong, so he changed his attitude and that was pretty awesome.

The ending was a bit shocking and made me grip my quilt with all the suspense and the revelations; the story took a complete turn and I started seeing the previous events from another angle. I am eager now to read book 2 ! ( )

Enjoyable read about a family of vengeful mermaids, with a bit of romance thrown it. It was also refreshing to read young adult fiction told through the eyes of a male character, in this case, Calder, a merman, who was torn between loyalties for his sisters and Lily, the love interest and daughter of the man the mermaids set out to kill. This story is about a family of murderous mermaid energy vampires. Need I say more? It was a fun, quick read, and I look forward to the sequel. ( )

It took me a few weeks to finish this book. I wasn't able to connect with the characters the way I was hoping. The story line was great though.

I was confused when I first started reading because the main character is a male, and the cover shows a female. Even with that little aspect, the cover is gorgeous. Calder, the main character, and his sisters are mermaids. Don't expect any singing crustaceans because these aren't the Disney mermaids we are accustomed to. They are ruthless and murderous.

The relationships are odd. Calder and his sisters are pulled together every year. They can hear each others thoughts while under water. However, this only comes through when it's convenient. Calder is very stalker-like,and gave me the creeps most of the time. All of his actions seem forced. Nothing about him flowed with his character.

On to the story. I really enjoyed the author's writing style, and that's what kept me engaged. Her way with words helps move the story along. I definitely liked that the mermaids were sinister. It's nice reading a book where things aren't hunky dory. This book also shows that there are bad people otu there that are capable of having feelings and possibly redemption. ( )
