How he achieved what he achieved given his traumatic childhood, and with a smile on his face, is the real miracle of this well-written book. Truly impressive. ( ) Wow! When I first began this book, I planned to read one chapter per day until the end, like I normally do. But my plans were derailed and as soon as I started I could not put this down! Le Freak is one of the best autobiographies that I've ever read, if not THE BEST. By no means was this an "easy" read. In fact, much of it was difficult to read so I can only imagine how Nile Rodgers felt writing it all down, but the words were eloquent and it was all beautifully-put together. Absolutely phenomenal! Most people may know Nile Rodgers as the leader of the band Chic, whose songs “Le Freak” and “Good Times” raced to the top of the charts in the late 70’s. However, in his new autobiography Le Freak: An Upside Down Story of Family, Disco, and Destiny, you find out so much more about that man behind those songs Raised in a mixed race and counter culture family, Rodgers’ was almost destined to be a musician. His story culminates in the late 70’s and early 80’s, when Rodgers produced hits with such superstars as David Bowie and Madonna. His writing style is reminiscent of his music; full of life, energy, and a whole lot of fun. Verdict Rodger’s story is an interesting tale full of typical rock star excess stories, but shouldn’t be labeled as such. His first hand knowledge of the late disco and early 80’s pop music scene makes this title a very unique and telling read. Not essential for every library, this title would make a great fit for libraries with strong popular music collections.—Justin Hoenke, Portland P.L., ME (note: I originally wrote this review for Library Journal) sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
Today's pop music--genre-crossing, gender-bending, racially mixed, visually stylish, and dominated by dance music with global appeal--is the world that Nile Rodgers created. In the 1970s and 1980s, he wrote and produced the songs that defined that era and everything that came after. Aside from his own band, Chic, he worked with everyone from Diana Ross and Madonna to David Bowie and Duran Duran, transforming their music and redefining what a pop song could be. But before he reinvented pop music, Nile Rodgers invented himself. Born into a mixed-race, bicoastal family of dope-fiend bohemians, he was on his own by age 16, half-hippie and half-Black Panther. He jammed with Jimi Hendrix, toured with Big Bird, and played in the legendary Apollo Theater house band. And then he discovered disco... Here he gives us the behind-the-scenes tales of the songs we all know, and lovingly re-creates the outsider subcultures that live on in the world of pop he helped to set in motion.--From publisher description.
