I am okay with putting a book down and returning to it later, but very rarely do I put a book aside and know I will not be picking it back up. Unfortunately, this is one of those books. First off, I felt like I was coming into the middle of the story, so instead of developing the characters I was stuck trying to figure it all out myself. Secondly, the romance was just bad. There was no build up, we are just left having to rely on what the characters are saying as opposed to any real tension and actions. Lastly, I really disliked Liv. For someone who is suppose to be almost 30 years old, her actions and thoughts were more of a immature teenage. I've read YA novels where the protagonist more maturity than her.

Liv just constantly kept doing the wrong things, then didn't learn from her mistakes. I hated all side characters, and was just annoyed with everything in general. As much as I wanted to power through it to see if any of the characters were redeemable, life's too short to read a book you don't want to read. ( )

Olivia has been living in Nodaway Falls, New York all of her life with her friends Peach, Millie and Stacy. Waitressing in Crazy Cousin Betty's Waffle House has put her in the center of community gossip and given her unrequited love for the cook, Tobias. Just as Olivia makes the decision to leave Nodaway and find a new life somewhere in Europe, Davina Granville stops in the restaurant and does something to Olivia with an old sweat sock that leaves her feeling tingly especially in her hands and arms. When Davina tells Olivia that she has unknown magic powers and that someone is out to steal them from her, Olivia thinks that Davina is crazy, but things start happening that Olivia can't easily explain, and she begins to wonder what the truth really is.

A Little Night Magic is a cute rom-com that includes the charm of a small town with the addition of fantasy through magic. The characters are fun and easy to like, but some of the secondary characters are not well developed, however this does not detract from the enjoyment of the book. The light, amusing tone through most of the book shifts dramatically by the end with some jarring events that don't seem to fit with the rest of the story. Overall, however, A Little Night Magic is a delightful story with more than a few emotional moments. ( )

Liv is a bit bored and unhappy. The guy she loves doesn't seem to love her, she doesn't have any family left and she decides to go to Europe for a very open ended trip.
Then a lady shows up while Liv is at work and reveals to Liv that she was born magical and was never told about her powers.
Liv has to decide whether to run or whether to confront this new information head on. When she realizes her life is in danger and possibly her friends' lives as well, she knows she has some important decisions to make.
One of the biggest? She has to decide who she can trust (new friends? Old? The man she's in love with?)

I'm more into magical realism than fantasy, so maybe I enjoyed this a bit more than most reviewers did. I haven't read a lot of books with witches in them, it's more about the characters and story lines. I liked both, it's darker than the fiction I normally read, but not to the point that I didn't enjoy it. ( )

I really enjoyed this story and am disappointed that it's not the first of a series, as I'd love to hear more. The characters and setting remind me a lot of the Jane Jameson series by Molly Harper, which is one of my favorite urban fantasy series. ( )
