THE HISTORY OF THE GOLD RUSH BROUGH TO LIFE The Klondike gold rush shook the Yukon on the eve of the twentieth century and stands today as the defining era in the taming of North America and especially Canada's Great North. The history of how a handful of colorful characters sparked the largest mobilization of gold seekers in history is brought vividly to life in this debut graphic novel by the cartoonist Zach Worton. His stunning depictions of the Canadian wilderness are as much a part of the action as the key players: the prospectorGeorge Carmack; the racist prospector Robert Henderson; "Skookum Jim Mason," a Native American posthumously credited with discovering gold; "Soapy Smith," a noted con artist; Belinda Mulrooney, perhaps the first female involved in the gold rush to become rich; and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.Worton draws the reader into an absorbing historical tale of political intrigue and personal adventure, played out amid the free-for-all atmosphere of the Wild West. Drawn in an inviting, engagingly detailed style,The Klondikealso features notes and introductory texts accompanying each chapter, and a thorough, illustrated index of all the key players in the gold rush, as well as a glossary featuring notes about "How to Pan for Gold" and tips on how to spot the differences between "fool's gold" and the real thing.… (más)

I'm not a huge history buff so I wasn't sure if I was going to really enjoy the Klondike. But I thought it was important to read since Zack is a friend of mine and I wanted to be able to talk to him about the book. While the story started out a bit slow and it was a bit difficult to get a handle on the large cast of characters, it was a satisfying read by the end of the book. I really enjoyed how the story unfolded through a series of short vignettes with an introductory text piece at the beginning to provide some historical context. Worton has really done his research here and provides readers with an overview of what happened during the major gold rush in Canada. I always knew that this was a pretty major event in Canada but never had the chance to learn about it. Thanks to Zach's GN, I now have a working understanding. Highlights for me included his portrayal of Belinda Mulrooney as a tough-as-nails woman making her mark during the Gold Rush. Teachers will go nuts for this kind of book and could easily incorporate it in history curriculum. ( )
