I really enjoyed this book. I love it when The Doctor visits Earth History, it’s like having a fun history lesson. George Mann did a fantastic job at writing this story and he portrayed The Doctor, Amy and Rory perfectly just as they appear in the TV series. The secondary characters Angelchrist and Arven were great. The Squall I think were really creepy and a great Alien race for the Doctor to save the Earth from. The fact they used the TARDIS telepathic circuits to communicate with the Doctor toward the end of the book was pure genius! ( )

Apart from the poor prose style, my only other objection is that it doesn't really deliver on the Miltonian reference of the title other than by having a major character called Angelchrist. The story is a workmanlike time travel tale with alien incursions, split between a rather vague future London and a more precise 1910 setting. In the audio version, Nicholas Briggs does a fantastic job of injecting life into Mann's prose (though I find his Eleventh Doctor too demotic). ( )

Unlike most of the earlier harback books the Eleventh Doctor books have been darker in tone and somewhat more adult in tone - an echo of the TV episodes, especially in the second series of Matt Smith's time in the role.

Mann's 'Paradox Lost' follows on in this mode as we are introduced to a new alien race - the Squall, a hive species who grow ever stronger the more they absorb the brainwaves of their victims. With London staggering under an onslaught of these creatures the Doctor and his companions, joined by Professor Archangel, a former scientific advisor to British Intelligence and Arven, an android from 2789 (which is not a thousand years in Archangel's future - someone really bad at maths, or a typo here?!) ( )

'Humans experience the world in such a linear fashion. You live, you grow old, you die. But the universe is vaster and older and more complex than you could possibly imagine. History isn't linear, just because it seems that way. It's a living, changing thing. It shifts with the tides. History is more than the sum of what we experience, and it's not as fragile as you think. There are fixed points, yes,' he stopped for a moment to take a breath, 'things that have to happen, things that have occurred and will, always, occur. Those events can't change, can't be altered. Everything else... well, history flexes, Rory. Time bends. It tries to assert order on chaos.'
