Un excellent livre qui fait comprendre comment on a pu, en toute bonne foi ou non, soutenir le régime de l'Allemagne de l'Est. Le livre retrace la vie des différents membre de la famille, de trois générations, chacun ayant une expérience très différente et don un point de vue très différent sur le communisme. C'est écrit de façon dans un style très vivant, la présence des photos de chacune des personnes à différents moment de sa vie nous rend les rend très proches et en même temps, à mon avis, cela nous montre à quelle point une photo ne dit rien de la personne que l'on voit. Maxim Leo was 18 jaar oud toen de Berlijnse viel en Duitsland herenigd werd. In "Rode liefde" vertelt hij hoe het was om in de DDR te leven aan de hand van de levensgeschiedenis van zijn beide grootvaders Werner en Gerhard en zijn ouders Wolf en Anne en die van hemzelf. Het boek geeft volgens mij een heel goede indruk van het leven in de DDR en is erg vlot leesbaar.

Onze docent socialistische maatschappijleer op de volkshogeschool heette Ecki. Tijdens een les tekende Ecki een tabel op het bord. We zouden de voor- en nadelen van de DDR moeten opnoemen die binnen een minuut in ons opkwamen. Vreemd genoeg schoten me op dat moment alleen de voordelen te binnen, omdat we die altijd uit het hoofd hadden geleerd. De anderen leek het ook zo te vergaan. De tweede kolom bleef leeg. "Het schijnt een volmaakt land te zijn", zei Eckien hij schreef in de kolom met nadelen: "Leerlingen durven niet te zeggen wat ze denken." Dat wilden we niet op ons laten zitten en er ontstond een tamelijk lange lijst met gebreken. Geen vrijheid van meningsuiting, geen vrijheid om te reizen, te weinig fruit, geen vrije keuze, geen normale spijkerbroeken, geen persvrijheid. Dat waren in mijn herinnering de belangrijkste punten. We zaten daar, opgewonden, met gloeiende gezichten, het was de eerste keer dat we op school konden zeggen wat we echt dachten. ( )

A fascinating account of the life of several generations of an East German family. Maxim Leo is a young man when the Wall comes down in 1989. This is a fascinating account of the differing attitudes and assumptions of generations of his family. His great grandparents suffered (or otherwise) under the Nazis (one of them died in Auschwitz and another spent time in Oranienburg concentration camp). His grandparents' generation fought in the war as young adults, one of them being in the French resistance, and later were members of the idealistic generation that founded the German Democratic Republic. However disillusioned they later became, they generally retained a fundamental loyalty to the concept of their state as a bulwark against supposed fascism in Western Germany. Between this generation on the one hand, and, on the other hand, Maxim's generation with little or no loyalty or feelings towards their state, was the generation of Maxim's parents Wolf and Anne, who were small children when the GDR came into being, so were children of this system, with some of the instinctive loyalty of their parents, but with a growing wish for a wider variety of experiences in life and work than their state would permit them, culminating in the relatively sudden explosion of desire for freedom that caused the Wall to fall and the GDR to collapse in that heady autumn of 1989. A great read with a lot to say about generational attitudes and how they are shaped by external circumstances as well as the personae of the individuals themselves. ( )

A surprisingly beautiful book. Leo charts his family history through three generations - the war generation who founded the GDR, their children who came of age during its rule, and their grandchildren who - like Leo - grew up feeling no connection to the stifling dictatorship, and who were glad to see it washed away.

In talking about his family members' different attitudes to and roles in relation to the state, Leo puts together a personal history of the GDR that is genuinely illuminating. It is sparingly and convincingly written, and turns out to be a real treasure. Highly recommended. ( )
