I bought this book based on the attractive colourwork patterns. Chickadees, nuthatches, cardinals, and more all beautifully rendered in knitting. What I failed to realize until I received the book and prepared to start knitting, was that for some reason the author was fixated on the idea that knitting mittens and gloves from fingertips to cuff was simple and easy. Consider for a moment these instructions: “Once all the fingers and the thumb have been knit for one glove, assemble the glove body.” That means you have to keep track of five tiny pieces, not lose them, remember which is which, and line them up in the right order. Challenging to impossible. It also seems that all fingers are the same circumference, which is not how fingers work; or else, despite over 50 years of reading knitting patterns, this one is beyond me. These are still gorgeous patterns, but I refuse to knit mittens and gloves upside down and the designer refuses to knit them any other way. Irreconcilable difference! ( )

Nice enough patterns. An innovative way of working from the top down that could be developed more, nothing very much on how to knit with two yarns. Not something I would use for a class. ( )
