This report of a conference held at University College in Dublin explores problems associated with cooperation and computer applications involved in networking. An introductory session on the theory and objectives of physical and cooperative networking by Lucy Tedd, a consultant on computer systems in libraries, is followed by Dennis Jenning's report on a University College project to establish an experimental packet switching telecommunications network in Ireland. A review is presented by Patrick Kelly, a director from the Institute of Higher Education, on automated cataloging systems in Ireland, including cooperation between academic, special, and public libraries in Ireland and the British Library and the Birmingham Library Cooperative Mechanization project. Other papers include a review of cataloging networks outside Ireland (mainly in the United Kingdom) by Lucy Tedd and a description of the Euronet-DIANE information retrieval network by Barry Mahon of the network. The papers are followed by a general panel discussion. Included are a list of contributors and a list of participants along with a brief table of abbreviations. (Author/RAA)… (más)
