""There is only one thing I fear in life, my friend ... One day the black will swallow the red."" "Under the watchful gaze of his young assistant and the threatening presence of a new generation of artists, Mark Rothko takes on his greatest challenge yet: to create a definitive work for an extraordinary setting." "This play is a moving and compelling account of one of the greatest artists of the 20th century whose struggle to accept his growing riches and praise became his ultimate undoing."--Jacket. I've always had a casual interest in Mark Rothko because of Dar Williams' "Mark Rothko Song," and when I found out the play won a Tony AND it was about Rothko, I knew I had to own this. I'm glad that I found out about it, because it was really fascinating.
The entire play took me about an hour or so to read, which is why I want to read it a few times more to really "get it." It's very "thinky." I'd also like to read up on Rothko more as a result of reading this.
