Reads more like an easy reader / beginner book than a typical picture book. ( )

Animal life mirrors ours, that's what this book seems to tell us. The way the mother bear and elder brother search for the other, and the way the young girl, Bessie, and cub, Snow Bear, play together. When the elder pair spots the younger two, they just watch them - knowing Bessie and Snow Bear are safe with each other. That is until a male polar bear appears and the fun breaks up. The main theme of this book is friendship, that it can come from the strangest of places and be just as strong. ( )

A nice, simple book about a brother and sister who meet two polar bears. Though man can be harmful to polar bears, and polar bears can be harmful to man, in this book they coexist peacefully. Very nice paintings throughout the book. ( )

Like many of Wendell Minor's illustrations (or paintings), I was pleased with what I saw in the book to help capture the story. Jean Craighead George and Minor work excellently together. This book shows us the mutual understanding of humans and animals. ( )
