Review #6 — How to learn a foreign language by Paul Pimsleur (1980)

Paul Pimsleur shares his ideas and tips on how to learn a foreign language, which can sometimes be a daunting and stressing task for the beginner. He examines why many drop out already at the start and blames bad and uninspiring teachers.

This book is a quick read, with short easy to understand chapters. It's packed with interesting tidbits from stories about language, his own travels, Ingrid Bergman, Richard Burton (not the actor), and Boswell, to leaning verbs horizontally, using flash cards and learning sentences rather than individual words.

Anyone interested in learning a foreign language, should start out reading this first. Start by reading a chapter a day to allow for reflection: It'll save you time and mistakes.

First published posthumously in 1980 with the sudden death of Pimsleur at 48, this text was out of print for decades, only to be recently re-published in 2013 in hardback. - IRONJAW'S BOOK REVIEW, Review #6. January 18th 2015 .

When I first began this Pimsleur language program, I would frequently listen to some lessons more than once in order to fully understand the material 100%. I used to think this way back in college too, and I can tell you it's a hindrance. Sure, if there's a difficult concept, then some review is warranted. But most of the time I would say that once you think you've 75-80% got it, move on and the rest will take care of itself.

I'll never forget when I completed this lesson—and at the time I didn't have access to the additional Spanish IV lesson—I searched online for what language program to use next. Overwhelmingly, the reply was, "Start speaking Spanish."—a frightening and obvious answer. And the right answer.

Thank you Pimsleur Method for giving me the confidence to make mistakes as I learn to speak Spanish. Now it's time I take my learning out into the real world.
