I read this as a part of a buddy read with my dad. While there was history and science and anecdotes that I enjoyed, the whole "ten things" framing device felt artificial and didn't seem to fit the subject well, given just how many of these drugs were opiates/opioids at thus related to each other. This made some of the structuring and repetition of information feel slapdash and arbitrary. It took me out of the narratives and reminded me this is definitely a book somebody wrote for a paycheck. (Not that people shouldn't get paid! Or be motivated by money!)

I did learn interesting things! Just didn't love the format.… (más)

Come, quando e perché i farmaci hanno cambiato il nostro mondo

I farmaci hanno completamente cambiato la nostra vita. Fin qui nessuno può avere da ridire. Non ha però senso parlare di farmaci in modo generico, mettendoli tutti in uno stesso calderone: in questi ultimi due secoli siamo passati dai farmaci ricavati dalle piante a quelli creati chimicamente per arrivare a quelli prodotti biologicamente. Mica sapevo per esempio che gli anticorpi monoclonali sono fabbricati a partire da cellule cancerogene di topo che sono state gentilmente convinte a produrre proprio quell'anticorpo specifico. In questo libro Hager prende dieci farmaci, o più precisamente gruppi di farmaci, e fa una specie di storia della medicina a partire da essi. Comincia con l'oppio, noto già nell'antichità, per terminare appunto con i monoclonali. Non parla di aspirina perché nell'introduzione dice che ci sono già tanti racconti su di essa; si occupa di molte droghe, anche perché sono quelle che in fin dei conti sono più famosi; ma forse il capitolo più interessante e sicuramente personale è quello sulle statine. Hager racconta che si è molto arrabbiato quando gli arrivò un'email di un qualche dipartimento che lo invitava ad assumere le statine, e cominciò così una ricerca di vari mesi dove scoprì che non si è mica certi che esse servano davvero a prevenire gli infarti... Ma consiglio vivamente di leggere la storia raccontata direttamente da lui. La traduzione di Cristina Spinoglio è scorrevole.… (más)
