Charles Romyn Dake was a 19th-century American writer. The only work published by Dake is A Strange Discovery which is a sequel to Edgar Allan Poe's "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket" which tells the story of young Arthur Gordon Pym who stows away aboard a whaling ship called Grampus. Various adventures and misadventures befall Pym including shipwreck, mutiny, and cannibalism before he is saved by the crew of the Jane Guy. A Strange Discovery takes up his story and is narrated by Doctor Bainbridge who recounts the story his patient Dirk Peters told him of his journey with Gordon Pym in Antarctica, including a discussion of Poe's poem "The Raven". Its being told by a doctor who extracted the information from Dirk Peters. As such it lacks detail at times.
All of the characters are quite good and it has a number of interesting and funny digressions.
There are various discussions on money, doomsday devices, medicine, politics etc. Can be a little dry at times especially when geology is concerned but it was worth a look.
A actually liked this a little more than 'Pym' or 'An Antarctic Mystery' which was Jules Verne's sequel to 'Pym'. (
