Andrew Taylor

I think Andrew Taylor's Lydmouth series a good historical mystery series. It just misses the WWII cut off for the historical mystery group as it is set in the 1950's. It has with a post-war, repressed society gloom casting a slight noir shadow over everything and depicts the darker side of small town life.

I have some other stuff by him I have not read-notably the Roth trilogy books and The American Boy.

I have read and enjoyed Caroline Minuscule, which I think of as belonging the the quasi-scroundrel school of British fiction. Others that have a simliar feel for me are Simon Raven's Roses of Picardie and Jane Stevenson's London Bridges. To find Raven you need to go to UK sources.

Hi quartzite! I've read nothing of Taylor's apart from The American Boy but that I enjoyed immensely. Really should add a thread on it on the HistMyst group, it has a great atmosphere, decent characters and intelligent humour. Quoth the parrot: "Ayez peur!"

Quasi-scoundrel school? Well, I enjoyed Peter Lovesey's The Reaper and that's a scoundrel novel as I live and breathe, so I suppose Caroline Minuscule is now on my TBR list ;)

I haven't read everything he's published, but A. Taylor's Lydmouth series is quite a favorite of mine. I even order the books from amazon.co.uk as necessary because the more recent titles aren't published in the US.

I've also read the Roth Trilogy, and the other day decided I might re-read those books.

I have recently discovered that Taylor wrote several books featuring William Dougal the protagonist of Caroline Minuscule and have started to acquire them. Just read Old School Tie and another has arrived in the mail.

Have just completed the latest Andrew Taylor in the Lydmouth series.Naked to the Hangman which brings out some interesting aspects of the early career of Detective Chief Inspector Richard Thornhill.A super series.

A. Taylor is my favorite author in British crime. His Lydmouth series and Roth trilogy are topnotch. Worth the read and I think worth collecting.

Quartzite (and everyone), thanks. I'll keep my eyes out for Andrew Taylor - and Jane Stevenson. I read too little that is not vintage; and both appeal.

The new Andrew Taylor just arrived yesterday (HB, 1 ed., ordered from Amazon). It seems to be one of his best yet.

Bleeding Heart Square is the latest offering by Andrew Taylor. It is a 'stand alone' book I understand and not part of any of this author's other series.
By the way he is one of the many crime authors to appear at Heffers of Cambridge 'Bodies in the Bookshop' event,which takes place on the 15th of this month. Admission is by ticket only.
