I am working on U.S. Grant: American Hero, American Myth by Joan Waugh. Among other things, this book is a Main Selection of the History Book Club, and a Selection of the Military Book Club and the Book-of-the-Month Club. This was a Christmas gift list book. Thank you!
I have been waiting for a new "unbiased" book on Grant for some time. I believe I have found it in Waugh's book. The first third of the book is a nice summary of his life, including the war and his presidency. The last two thirds, that I am just getting into is a thorough analysis, based on review of primary source materials, of how Grant has been treated by history, historians and the media since that time. I really like what I have seen so far....

I just got done reading a fascinating book titled How the Universe Got Its Spots. Janna Levin is a astrophysicist interested it the origins of the universe and whether the universe is finite or infinite. She does a great job explaining theoretical physics in ways that I can actually understand.

I received Eaarth by Bill McKibben from the LibraryThing Early Reviewer program. I'm going to go back and read his book The End of Nature first... I skipped it years ago, but it's time to read it. McKibben's book is often quoted in other books on the environment.

Arrion gave me the book The G. I. Diet Clinic by Rick Gallop. Check out the review. I was disappointed by the diet itself. Nothing new. However the recipes looked interesting.

Tonight I'm going to start The Last Dickens by Matthew Pearl, from my Christmas wish list... ;-)

Well, Dickens didn't last long... India and Boston in 1870 plus print too small... didn't even get to first base.
Now, I'm going to try Savages & Scoundrels: The Untold Story of America's Road to Empire Through Indian Territory by Paul VanDevelder - his great grandmother was Native American... they just found this out in 1996, thus, the book! ;-)
