Walter Wager's Sledge Hammer: Ex-OSS agents regroup to "take out" a criminal organization that runs a city in Florida after one of their group is killed in the city.
Originally published in 1970 by the author of 58 Minutes (58 Minutes was used as the basis for Die Hard 2 (the movie)). Ok book, wouldn't really recommend.
Ex-Military characters, Thriller

Ty Drago's Phobos: Outstanding book about the first Martian officer in the military, and a very tense time in Mars-Earth (specifically with an Earth corporation) relations (Mars colonized by humans about 100 years before this book starts, the humans on Mars consider themselves to be Martians, and the Earth humans (who the Martians call Terrans) see the Martians as backward and very unintelligent (poisoned air, poor food, etc.). Rated 5 stars (out of 5), so I'd recommend this book.
Military characters, Science Fiction

John Birmingham's Final Impact - Final? book in the Axis of Time series. Only recommend if read the other two books. Ok book, but not one that will be enjoyed if reader has not read first two books in the series.
Military characters (and non-military in war-zone), Science Fiction, Alternate History.
