The most recent Bibliomystery for me was last month (What happened to Nov.?). Actually, technically, it was in October, so not last month. October is a good time for Poe. Also, I'd been meaning to read Matthew Pearl (had not 'til then) and found this book at my local Half Price Books on clearance.

Umm.... I liked it. I think. One of the stronger elements to the book was a fairly believable 19th Century American voice. I don't like a lot of historical fiction b/c the voice is wrong. I spend a lot of time reading 19th C. journals, letters, etc. at work so I think I've got a decent ear for the way it should "sound". Pearl did a decent job in this area.

The pedantic in me liked, no- loved the original research that went into the novel. I for one loved the non-fictive elements. Not sure if that's a word. It was true to the sad life of Poe and offers a couple ideas as to how he truly died. I know some readers have been disappointed that it wasn't more macabre, not more fantastic.

Some of the "twists" were really only turns. There did seem to be some wierd editing, or rushed editing perhaps. I spotted a couple mis-aligned plot holes, and I'm not the best at spotting those. I tend to mend them up in my mind while reading and ignore it.

How does Poe Shadow compare to other works by Pearl? What's better?

The Dante Club is by far my favorite of Pearl's books so far. Creepy, well-textured, and marvelous. The others aren't bad by a long shot, but I liked Dante Club the best.
