In general if an author has only a single name listed (usually the last) they should NOT be combined with the full named author.
An easy example to see is 'Anderson' there are quit a few Anderson's and any one could be listed with last name only. This often causes a combining nightmare.
IF someone wants their work combined with all the others of the same work they need to take the time and FIX the entry with the correct full name. THEN combine them.
With the new "don't combine" feature this should be less of a problem, but it will still exist.
