Does anyone know of an online list of complete FS titles, or does anyone have a spreadsheet or similar, that I can take out with me when I browse second hand bookshops?

My wife and I have over 1,000 titles between us but the trouble is, I can never remember which books she has already got and vice versa.

I've asked FS several times to include a printable checklist on their website but to no avail. I'm not bothered about current prices or anything like that, I just want a list of titles that fits into my pocket rather more easily than Folio 60!

It should be easy for the FS to put the title index of Folio 60 in PDF format...
If you have the book you could scan the index pages and reduce them to a handy, pocketable size.

Needs cleanup; OCR isn't perfect and I haven't taken the time to fix all the errors.

wow! what service!

Thanks for scanning this. I did a quick check by simply scanning the first two or three letters in the alphabetical listing, and caught many line-break issues, and a few (but not many) spelling errors (under 'F' - "The Prankish Kingdom", for example). Given that the goal was a complete list, not a searchable index for Folio 60, once the line breaks are fixed, even with a few typos (OCR-os?) it's a very servicable list.

Thanks again,
Os.

PS - To save others from doing the same eiding I'm doing, I'm finishing up this edited version of slashclee's work, and will post it where it can be grabbed as soon as I finish.

>4 slashclee:
post edited so the link points to the more universal .htm file.
I fixed the line-break issues and a few OCR issues (as I spotted them). The OCR had trouble with capital 'J', at least when the first letter on a line, so I fixed those that I saw. I did virtually nothing with the numbers, since the point is to get a list of titles and authors. OCR does well (though it tends to get 'i' in place if '1'), but proofing numbers is nearly impossible, and seems of little use, since the index is readily searchable if you have a copy of FS 60 in your hands.

This index is actually just fine as slashclee posted it simply as a list of titles and authors, as long as the user watches for odd page breaks (which are usually obvious because things look out of place in the alphabetical order).

Anyway, my revision is posted here.

Thanks again, slashclee for getting this to us.

Os.

Now, if you want this list to carry in your pocket, you may be disappointed. I formated it for two columns in MSWord, using 10pt font and the least space between entries I considered readable. It came out to 66 pages! With an 8pt font, it's 53 pages.

Actually, looking through this index more carefully as I was editing it, it's very well done. It includes variations of titles that one might use to find a work, such as "hundred" and "100" and putting "1066 and All That" both at the top with the numbers and in with titles starting with 'Ten'.

Osbaldistone, awesome work, but the .mht file looks like junk for me. Can you post the normal HTML instead of the web archive?

#9 - If you open in Microsoft Internet Explorer it will display. It's good-ole Microsoft's "everyone uses Windows right?" mentality :)

Hey Os - If you download PDF Creator - http://www.pdf-creator.us/, you can "print" your MS Word file to a .pdf file. This option is probably a little more universal.

Editado: Abr 5, 2009, 8:11 pm

Okay, I edited the initial post so the link points to a more universally readable file.

The HTML version is here

The PDF version (Adobe Acrobat or Reader 6.0 and later) is here. If you are running a later version of Adobe Reader or Acrobat, you can probably open this simply by clicking on the link. If you are running version 7 or earlier, you may have to right-click on the link and 'save target as' to capture the PDF file.

Sorry for any confusion.

Since I am putting up PDFs, I put up the most compact (usable) version I could come up with. It's down to 32 letter size (US) pages using multiple columns and an 8pt font to try and reduce the white space to a minimum. You can load or capture IndexSml.pdf at this link. Even double sided, this is still a lot of pages to carry in your back pocket.

With the 5-column version that makes 16 pp printed recto verso. If you could send me a Word version I could reduce it further and reset it in Quark Xpress with a smaller font and line spacing.

>12 overthemoon:
you can capture the 5-column version in MSWord here.

Simply reducing the space between lines to zero, and the line spacing to 7-pt, this version is reduced to 19 pp total (10 verso recto). Then I eliminated the title and the top margin, and reduced the bottom margin to the minimum (printer dependent), and it's now 18pp total (9 verso recto). That's about as tight in MSWord as I can get it and still be readable. This xtra tight version is here.

Os

PS - the title could remain in the top or bottom margin, depending on how close the the paper edge you can print. Or, for some printers, you can simply 'adjust to fit' and squeeze it in.

>13 Osbaldistone:
If we could eliminate the Folio 60 page numbers, which are of no use if it's simply to serve as a portable list of FS publications, quite a bit of space would be freed up for, say, a 6-column format. I suspect this would cut the page count down quite a bit. However, I haven't come up with an algorithm that can do this reliably, since numbers appear in titles as well, and titles appear both before and after commas in the entries.

Anyone?

I'll have a go at work tomorrow, if I can find the time. I would eliminate the numbers and maybe some repetition. Thanks for the Word version.

#10 - If Microsoft released Internet Explorer on Linux (or put out a modern version on Mac OS X) I would certainly have tried that. :)

I started work on the list, including ONLY the author's name and title; for the moment I have left in the numbers as they can be useful for seeing if a work is part of a set (for example the Dahl BFG, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, etc. all have the same number).
Have also been ironing out hard hyphens and misspellings, and have got up to letter E.
Whoever compiled the original index did a terrific job, lots of cross-references.
It's going to take me a while and now I have to get back to my real work, as I have deadlines to meet.

I have the prospectuses so I can do that, but maybe some of the specials will be missing.

The best way to carry your library about is by using LibraryThing mobile. I can view/search my entire library via my Blackberry when I am browsing bookstores. Sure beats shuffling through paper.

LibraryThing (or someone else) would have to develop the app, then they get it in the iPhone App store.

I think Osbaldistone and overthemoon are halfway towards developing a Folio Devotees' Checklist iPhone app. If you get it into the App store your teamwork might make enough to fund your Folio habits ;)

my work in progress is almost done; in fact I thought it was completely done till I realized I had erased all the books without authors (i.e. Arabian Nights, the Folio this and that, the stories from the Strand, etc.). Now somehow I have to go through the whole list again, find them and re-insert them. Then I have to decide what to do with the numbers. I think I'll have to leave them in when there are multiple editions of the same title, e.g. Wind in the Willows. And some of the typos are hard to find; J has often come out as f, as in fapanese, for example.

26Osbaldistone
Abr 17, 2009, 2:02 pm

>25 overthemoon:
I wouldn't worry too much about page numbers. And most typos will be obvious to the user. So how much you attack these issues depends on how much time you want to put into it, and how close to perfect you want it to be.

>24 wiredreader:
As far as a iPhone app, I assume the app being discussed is an interface with LT so we can access our catalogue whilst scanning the shelves in the local bookstore.

I don't own an iPhone, but I'd bet there is a file format that would allow one to store the FS list for reference on many of the smarter phones without requiring the development of an app.

Sorry, you're right. The numbers are book numbers not page numbers. Unless it's to save space, I wouldn't spend too much energy trying to delete them from the list.

What you probably want is "Avery's Folio Society Catalogue 1947 to 2007" which is a pocket sized volume of about 50 pages and lists all titles, original price and estimated current prices in various conditions, P,G,VG,F,M in sterling

It can be bought through eBay or direct from Alan Avery.

What do people know about the very deluxe editions FS does?

Chase: I saw this edition of Dracula when I spoke with Abigail Rorer at the CODEX in Berkeley this year. It is not a FS edition per se but rather a special deluxe edition that the illustrator came up with. She has signed the standard FS edition, put it in a very nice clamshell box, and may have thrown in an extra print (cant' remember this detail) and other extras. It looked very nice and Abigail is a joy to talk to.

Yes, I've been on the lookout for years for the Folio Society limited edition of Robert Graves' translation of The Golden Ass, signed by the illustrator, Ayrton, but have never seen one available.

We are obviously not "favored subscribers."
