I am a minor collector of antique books and over the years I have found some touching items the previous owners were using as bookmarks-
~an ancient four-leaf clover
~a love letter written with a quill pen
~newspaper clipping from 1895
~lock of hair tied with a bugundy ribbon
~crimson maple leaf
~grocery list of flour, sugar, lamp oil
~piece of leather
~scrap of printed cotton
~a crisp, Canadian one dollar bill (no longer in circulation or made ftm)

The best one was a book I paid 59 cents for. The Young Folks Treasury: Golden Hours With The Poets Vol XI with the business card from Cote's Antiques, Main Street, Monticello, Maine
Anyone finding playing cards, and paint chips from Lowe's and Home Depot--that's me.

I have a beautiful (though in need of restoration) copy of The Bells by Poe with a lovely carved and gilded cover. In it is a wide ribbon, handpainted with lilies and a butterfly. There's a card attached to the ribbon with "Easter 1881" and a French bible verse written on it.
It seems to be the only bookmark I can recall ever finding in a book.

Fascinating stuff. I've found a few odd items myself, as, I'm sure, have you.
