Years ago I picked up a book in a book bin which I THINK was titled The King Amazed and featured as sort of magic-realism (but not quite) story in which a king seeking to see his queen naked is befriended by a worldly character who turns out to be satan incarnate (in a good way) and we later meet a Jesuit priest with a penchant for getting in trouble with authority who is Jesus incarnate. The two actually share a mission to help out mankind but go about it differently. I very much enjoyed it and would like to add it to my library, but I misplaced the book somewhere along the way and can't seem to find bibliographic specifics about it to look it up anywhere. So perhaps I got the title wrong. I believe the author was from a smallish or unusual country (from my parochial perspective) or at least a European one. And it had won some sort of book prize of the rarified sort. Any light shed will be appreciated.

A quick googling brings up the King Amaz'D: A Chronicle by Gonzalo Torrente Ballester (the touchstone for the book seems to stunned...and is not coming up). The ISBN for the Everyman's Paperback Classic edition is 0460877305. It's sounds like what you are describing.
