2024 ... the same story

I am much poorer because I spent a ridiculous sum on even more books that I don't need - and I don't even know what the books are yet - but this is okay, because I have reasons.

Once upon a time I took my three children to a bookstore, because they had gift cards.

The first one said, "I'm a little bit short", I said, I will help.
The second one said, "I forgot my gift card at home", I said, I will help.
The third one said, "I don't have a gift card". I said, I forgot about that when I invited you to come with us, I will help. But now I owe a bit extra help to the first two.

We get to the counter.
The first one says, "I forgot my gift card at home, too."
I said, I will help. You can each pay me back when we get home.
The nice lady behind the counter said "You can sign up for our reward program and it will save you money. And on your birthday you'll get an email offering a discount code with even more savings." I said, that will help.

We get home.
The first one said, here is my gift card, it is the only way I can pay you back.
The second one said, here is my gift card too, same story - and it was for half the amount I thought.

The email arrived, offering 20% off my next purchase. I have two gift cards that can't be spent on anything else. You can see how at this stage, there is only one logical outcome.

Condolences. I don't think you have any choice but to use the gift cards at the bookstore. Live and learn. Hope you find something interesting.

You seem to be leading your children down a rosy path to the same perditious fate. Unless they continue this gambit.

Have you ruled out collusion between the children and the bookstore?

That is tragic. What a position to be put in. Hardship, surely that's why the extra 20%. It's hazard pay.

Are you supposed to buy only books you need? Maybe that's where I always go wrong... :)

>6 AnnieMod: I think buying books beyond your ability to read them is a sign of an optimist that they will live that long. Someone who tends to buy books they don't need is someone who has a sunny outlook on life.

I have a sticker that says "Bury me with my TBR"

>8 reconditereader: I slipped the paperback book he’d been reading into my husband’s pocket. And bubblegum (an odd vice) into the other pocket.
