Todd Thyberg announced the pre-order for his latest book, The Things by Peter Watts.

From the newsletter:

The Things is a horrifying story about an alien creature, thawed from the ice, who tries to understand the limitations and violent nature of the humans it experiences upon awakening. This story is a retelling of The Thing told from the perspective of the alien. Throughout the story, this alien creature is trying to understand its surroundings; by viewing the book with the aid of a UV flashlight you see these thoughts and view the world through the eyes of an alien being.

It took months to determine how best to portray this unique narrative perspective. Bold pen and ink illustrations are printed throughout that interact with the UV illustrations. Under normal light, the alien’s thoughts appear as a blind impression, visible, but subtle. When viewed with a UV light, the illustrations unite and form a deeper narrative. The afterword features an interview with Peter Watts discussing this story along with additional concept illustrations.

I've even designed and 3D-printed a sculptural flashlight for exploring the book. This limited edition sculpture is hand-painted and comes in a hand-made box that matches the book.

Available in two editions, each one letterpress printed with beautiful binding, foil stamping, and hidden horrors. The Deluxe Edition limited to 50, comes in a matching slipcase with either the custom or standard flashlight. The Standard Edition is limited to 200 and features a lovely UV-printed and foil-stamped dust jacket.

I've been looking forward to this one! I'm a little skeptical of the UV printing, but I kind've like how it just looks like blind embossing in the print sample without the light on it.
