You have to have a very British sense of humour to appreciate this book, so it is probably not one for North Americans or Europeans. If English is your second language it is probably incomprehensible due to its idiosyncratic spelling and use of schoolyard slang.
Written for children from about 9 to 13, the four Molesworth books (Down With Skool!, How to be a Topp, Whizz for Atomms and Back in the Jug Agane) have been collected together in one volume. Each book is broken down to multiple short chapters. They were first published between 1953 and 1959 and take the stuffiness of the English public school and thoroughly rag it, much to the delight of younger readers. Nothing is sacrosanct, from teachers and parents to sports and science, as Willans ridicules everything that the average student experiences.
The book is in the form of a narrative by Molesworth One (Molesworth Two was his younger brother) as he describes and explains life at St. Custard’s school
This must be one of the most illustrated books in the Folio Society oeuvre as there are line drawings by Ronald Searle on almost every one of its 398 pages. There is an eight page introduction by Wendy Cope. The chaotically illustrated endpapers (different front and back) are typical of the scribbles a school boy would do at the front and back of his school exercise book.
The book is bound in brown Kraft paper (again, like a school textbook) with illustrations in black by Searle on the covers and a yellow highlighted illustration on the spine. The black slipcase (22.9x15cm.) has a colour picture on the front.

The originals were one of the joys of my childhood, and I bought this collected edition as soon as it came out—one of the smaller treasures in my FS collection!
