I have a book review blog where I give away about half the books reviewed. I'm trying to find more ways to promote the giveaways, and so far I haven't found many. Would anyone like to share what you use?

So far, I've gone through online-sweepstakes.com and contestgirl.com. Both do fairly well for me. Other big sites such as this seem to generate very low numbers of people interested in book giveaways. I've also posted on a few blogs that do lists of giveaways. Helpful, but again, not a huge amount of hits coming from these. I'd love to hear what others are doing!

do you offer extra entries for bloggers who blog about the contest? that has helped me in the past some. it's a small thing but can help with technorati, too.

lovemybooks, I do offer extra entries for that, and that does help. I also offer extra entries for subscribing. And you're right! It helps that technorati rating too.

Twitter, Facebook, and Stumbleupon are all great ways to boost your giveaway profiles. If you use google reader you can also share your post with people who subscribe to your shared items.

Currently I'm giving away a Popsicle cookbook:

I give away two books a week, and have for quite a long time. This week, I have copies of The Last Embrace by Denise Hamilton. But, I specialize. I have ARCs, books, and sometimes even autographed ones, but they are almost all mysteries. So, I post on the listservs where mystery readers discuss mysteries. So, the Sweepstakes sites pick up the contests, but many of my regular entrants come from mystery sites. I average between 300-400 entries a week on my site, http://www.lesasbookcritiques.blogspot.com.

Questions O' Blog Masters...

How effective do you think the give-aways are? Are there long term differences in your traffic patterns?

27DevourerOfBooks
Jul 30, 2008, 8:16 am

I think it depends on the size and scope of the giveaway. I don't think I'm getting tons of new traffic from my current giveaway of one book, but my huge giveaway a few months ago spiked my traffic really high for awhile and, after it was over, I was left with approximately 2-3x the daily traffic I had been getting before.

28thekoolaidmom
Jul 30, 2008, 9:06 am

Well, I can tell you the $20 Borders gift card has doubled my everday views. I had about 700 views on the first three days of the giveaway, but after that it's settled to an average of 180 views as opposed to the 70 or so before.

29anysia
Jul 30, 2008, 12:45 pm

Rats. I'd love to have something like media mail up here. It costs $10 to send out a single book up here and that's within Canada only.

30lovemybooks
Jul 30, 2008, 1:24 pm

It helps some, though some of the readers I pick up are definitely the contest junkies.

I'd like to know if it really helps book promotion.

31anysia
Jul 30, 2008, 1:44 pm

I am guilty of subscribing to a blog just for the contest, but I will stick around if the content interests me.

I don't know if it's just me, but if a blog ONLY has book reviews, I general don't stick around because I can search for those when I need them. If there is bookish discussion or related issues or something sprinkled among the book reviews I'm more likely to stay.

Which reminds me, I need to find more time to practice what I preach on my own blog. :-)

I have a question about contestgirl.com; I visited it per your suggestion about promoting book giveaways on my blog, and wasn't sure where at contestgirl to post a book giveaway.

I probably don't track my readership closely enough to know how much effect the contests have, although I can see from Google Analytics that those pages get viewed A LOT.

I can't imagine getting 400 entries, though. I usually average 20-30, sometimes less. Sometimes the contests seem more like thank you gifts to my regular readers. I don't mind that a bit, but I would love to find some ways to use them to bring in more regular readers.

Hi posthumose

Besides the sites that you mentioned I post "an event" on Facebook. This gives you a chance to announce your contest to all of your friends.

I also post "promo" messages to some of the mail-lists that I belong to.

Every time I add a new post I have things set up so that it is announced on twitter. If you have a twitter account set up the blog announcements thru Twitterfeed.com

Another place to try is Goggle Groups - used to be usenet. Use the search box to locate groups that might be interested in what you're offering.

When actually running the contest I offer a chance to win to anyone who places a link to the post.

I've also been known to cross my fingers and pray. I figure it can't hurt.

All I can think of at the moment. Hope this helps.

I find the most effective thing for me is to just offer bonus entries for other bloggers who link to my giveaway. Those garner more entries, more links to my blog, and more traffic!

It also helps to be willing to ship internationally -- if you're not open to most of the world, those readers are less likely to stick around, I think.

Right now I'm giving away a copy of In the Land of Invisible Women, here.

91lovemybooks
Sep 17, 2008, 11:28 am

Shipping internationally is kind of a sensitive issue for me right now. The problem is, I do a lot of giveaways for authors and publishers who aren't willing to or can't ship internationally...if we say no to them, it means a lot less giveaways on a whole.

Anything I mail, I usually offer to ship internationally, but I recently mailed a book that was worth about a dollar for 13 dollars to Malaysia. That's a big difference from two something media mail.

My blog is just a hobby, but admittedly I want it to be successful. Right now, I need to find the balance of what is a realistic amount of money to spend on the blog as a whole, and what is realistic of others to expect of me.

92pennylegionbooks
Sep 17, 2008, 7:14 pm

It's true -- international shipping can be pretty expensive if you do it often (and don't even get me started about Canada Post! You media mailers are very privileged). But even if it's only occasional, I think it's a good thing to do.

I'm once again doing a monthly giveaway from my TBR pile. There are lots of choices: The Complete Persepolis, The Glass Castle, Middlesex, The Tenant Wildfell Hall, To Say Nothing of the Dog, and more.

Leave a comment HERE telling me what I should read next, and you could win the book when I'm done!

Deadline is September 30.

Since mail is so expensive here (our media mail went the way of the dodo decades ago -- I didn't even know we had it at one time until my Dad said 'hey, I remember something like that'), I stick to gift certificates and try to choose a company that either ships worldwide (bookcloseouts.com) or has outlets overseas (amazon, though somewhat limited and .com certificates don't work on the international sites).

I've also been wondering whether publishers will get with it and offer e-book versions to giveaway if the issue is truly postage (I'm not saying it isn't, I'm just saying there may be other reasons I'm not aware of). Although it's nice to give away a physical book, if it opened up giveaways of new releases to more countries people might be happy with ebooks. Or, even better, give a physical copy of the book within the shipping area and a second drawing of an ebook for commenters outside the shipping area (I'm just thinking out loud here).

My ARC of The Killing Circle was an e-ARC. While I would have preferred a physical book, given the chance to read a new book for free or not at all I'll pick read it for free any day even if it means digital.

I'm very thankful to publishers and bloggers who are willing to ship to another country because that's often how I get books. But if the choice was ebook or no book, then ebook would do me just fine.

Well, I'm getting all sorts of responses on how to deal with this international shipping thing from my post-BBAW survey.

I did check with Hachette and they told me it's a rights issue, not a cost issue.

But if we have other bloggers shipping out the books it becomes a cost issue. Even just shipping out one book internationally can cost the same amount if not more than the book.

Then there's reality vs. what people believe to be true.

While I will certainly seek out solutions to this problem for any future BBAW, I am only human.

I had a bit of a snafu on my blog tonight (of course - on my biggest contest ever) and I'm feeling really bad about it.

I posted the winners, then started sending the congratulations emails...then I noticed that one of the winners was an anonymous post. She didn't leave an email address or have a link to a blog or a live journal (the contest specifically says make sure you leave me a way to contact you). So, I pulled her name off and drew one more name. Am I being ridiculous for feeling bad about this?

With the upcoming 24 Hour Read-a-Thon next weekend, I've been collecting some books particularly for the occasion, and all of them are what look like, good short reads - perfect for both the event and boosting my yearly books read count! and I've decided to hold a read-a-thon giveaway for them as well!

The way this will work is: simply, each one I manage to read on the day will go in to a pool of books to be given away. Periodically during the 24 hours, I'll draw a winner and a book out of a hat, and they'll win that book! Names stay in the hat throughout the 'thon so, you definitely have a chance of snagging more than one book!

How to enter.
Either read and comment on any one of my review posts during the 24 hours of the read-a-thon (12:00 GMT 18/10 to 12:00 GMT 19/10 - comments before or after this time will not be entered). Or, between now and the end of the event, post about the giveaway on your blogs, and then let me know in the comments section of this post, for a bonus 2 entries. Easy!

This is open worldwide (although I do ask you have some patience in me getting them posted!) and winners will be notified only in the comments section of this post (check the 'Subscribe' box to get an email each time a comment is added) and all wins must be claimed by the 25th Oct)

Find out more here!

137LisaLynne
Oct 13, 2008, 8:31 am

How complicated do you folks get with your giveaways? I usually limit mine to commenting on the post, posting on your blog, and maybe a bonus option like an email. That seems to work pretty well, but I've noticed some blogs seemed to be getting more and more complex. One I came across recently involved posting a comment on the giveaway post, then looking at a book list and going back to the original review, and then...I gave up. I'm not sure what the point of a complicated procedure is, so maybe that's part of my question. Are you trying to build up average time on the site? Page reads? Or just make sure people are paging through your blog?

138bermudaonion
Oct 13, 2008, 9:39 am

I stick with the basic formula, because like you, I don't like the complicated ones. I've looked at some that require you to tell a story about something, and I think it's too much trouble.

>137 LisaLynne:,

I often add an extra entry for anyone commenting on any review. The main reason I do this is that a big contest like the one I just finished brings LOTS of new readers to my blog. If they just comment on a giveaway, they may not ever come back. If they decide they want to up their chances by just reading and commenting on a few reviews, sometimes they like what they find and I continue to see comments from them after the contest is over.

For my contests I like to give readers as many ways to enter as possible. If I come across a contests that requires me to think I'll most likely skip it.

Hope this helps

137, I do both for my giveaways (the oh-so-many I've had, ha!). I let people enter by simply commenting and then I have extra entries for doing a variety of things.

The reason I do this is:
1) to get traffic and interest in my blog
2) to give more entries to those people who show a true interest in the book
3) not to scare off the drive-by entries

I try to spread things out over a few days or weeks to get return visits and I try to keep things simple so that it doesn't take more than a few minutes.
