Yeah. I thought it was like Gmail—you get invites. Drat. Maybe I'll write the creators and try to butter them up. :)

I don't use Gmail, so I can't compare it to anything. But Ravelry's invites don't work like the ones on LT. Their invites are really more like notifications that it's your turn to sign up. They have a virtual "bookshelf" and I've heard mention that they'd like folks to be able to pull their list of knit and crochet books in from LT (don't know if it's even possible, but I've heard talk).
They've done some great things with their groups, too.
LT will always be my 1st love, though, so don't worry ;-)

I've "gotten in the door" at Ravelry. It was three weeks from when I put my name on the waiting list to when I received my invite. That was in November. A friend got in this week, and she'd been on the waiting list two weeks plus two days.
I've also been watching the size of the waiting list. It was over 11,000 when I signed up. Yesterday, it was under 7000.
The way the books thing works, is that you export your books from LT, and then upload that list to Ravelry. Only the books that they already have "registered" in the Ravelry central library will appear on your bookshelf. But they're continuing to add books, so we re-upload our lists periodically, and sometimes new books will appear.

#7: And I'm the "two weeks plus two days" person: there were about 8600 people ahead of me, so under 6000 has got to be faster (unless they take a break for the holidays).
The book exportation feature is not flawless. I tried it last night and Ravelry gave me a message that it could not find any new books in my entire LT library. I then manually entered one and Ravelry had no problems. Sigh. It's a nice idea, though.

I am new to LT and I am also a newbie to the Raverly community which I love, but I don't know how to upload a book from this site to Ravelry????can anybody send me to the right location, I have tried a couple of different things but nothing worked for me.

I wish I could help, but it did not work for me either. I just had to settle for uploading the ones they already had on Ravelry. :(

On Ravelry, when you click on Add a Book, the form that pops up allows you to have your LT collection turned into a database that Ravelry can read. You then point Ravelry to where you've saved that database (the Browse button) and turn it loose. Mind you, this has never worked for me, but maybe you will have better luck.
You can't upload a book that Ravelry doesn't already have. Ravelry is adding books with patterns first (either stitch dictionaries or books of project patterns). Books that are only about knitting or crocheting techniques will be added later. If you look through the threads on the Ravelry Editors group, you'll see that some people are requesting that particular titles be added. Other than that, I don't know what the process is.
(I'm really liking Ravelry, but in all honesty, LT is better set up to handle books. LT spoils you for Ravelry's library function!)

I use the LibrayThing Plus extension for Firefox to export subsets of my library. You can find it here: http://twistedlip.org/extensions/librarythingplus/
Other than that, I'm not aware of a way to do it.

No, I didn't throw all 2000 of my LT entries at Ravelry! I exported my LT library into a file I could load into MS Excel. Then I sorted (like, by tags) to isolate my knitting books. Then I just saved those off to another file, and used that file to upload to Ravelry.
As it is, only about half of my knitting books "got in". I have a few obscure books (like Japanese or Norwegian) and I tend to *not* buy pattern books. So I have to wait for those kinds of books to be registered in the main Ravelry library.

At the very top of each thread, above "xx/xx read (jump to first unread)", you will find a light gray star and an X. If you click the star, it turns yellow. When you want to find the message again, click the link for "Your Starred" on the left side of the screen.
Clicking on the X hides the thread. Very useful for ignoring all those "random la-la-la" messages.
