I read this years ago and remember thinking of it positively, but for the life of me can't remember the title.
The main story was framed as a wealthy woman telling a story to one of her guards. She'd just been married to a stranger she didn't know. The hero of her story was traveling across India on a flying tiger to rescue a princess. At the end of the book, the guard she was telling the story to sees the hero falling of the wall and dying. The guard takes up the roll of the hero and rescues the woman, who was the princess all along.
