Five years ago hazelk started a topic with this name in the group Book Talk. The game was that we would post snippets of poems and ask others to identify them. We didn’t play it as a competitive game; it was more like an undisciplined seminar in which we reminded each other of enjoyable poems that we could then go read in full. It went on for weeks through the holiday season and drew in dozens of participants. Could we do that again this year? Here’s a tentative start:
1. A bit of lowlife:
“Back and sides go bare, go bare; both hand and foot go cold.”
2. Class resentment:
“For lack of money, I could not speed.”
3. Royal triumph:
“Is it not passing brave to be a king and ride in triumph through Persepolis?”
4. Higher ambition:
“If ancient and prophetic fame in heaven err not”
5. Proverbial wisdom:
“A little learning is a dangerous thing; drink deep or taste not the Pierian spring.”
The Fogies will post no more till these have been identified. Have at thee!
