This is a series of books in which the main characters are mages.

There are 4 or 5 main characters.

They live together and are in some sort of competition against other groups of mages.

The competition consists of using magic to do things like hold bubbles of water over peoples heads so they faint or cannot breath, or taking the air around them away i think.

I remember the main characters didnt like hurting people.

I know one is a woman whos husband was abusive towards her.

One character is named Court or Courtland.

When i owned them the covers were drawings like sketchy colored drawings with one of the main characters featured on each book.

I really liked these books a lot please help.

I love Tamora Pierce and I've read all her stuff so I know thats not it. You're right it sounds close to some of her stuff, but I'm positive its not her. Thank u so much anyways. : )

This sounds familiar. Is there a scene featuring the abused wife discovering chocolate?

Maybe The Blending series by Sharon Green?

'Every twenty-five years, those with magical talents, called adepts, compete for a position within The Blending, a group of five adepts who rule the land. Tamrissa (the Fire adept), Lorand (the Earth adept), Jovvi (Spirit), Clarion (the Air), and Vallant (the Water) combine into The Blending, but another group of adepts attempt to usurp the position for themselves'
