I read this book within the last 3 years. I think it said it was the first book in a trilogy (or at least it was a first book in series and there would be more).
This book is dual pov, each pov in different times.
Time 1 has wizards as the lowest of the low and the main character's mother got killed by one because they got one to help her give birth and that person stole stuff from them and then killed the mom. Eventually the main character goes up and runs away from home because she has magic powers (like the wizards), and she finds two brothers who want to change the way the world thinks about wizards.
Time 2 is set in the future of time 1 and its main character has been sent to a school to train people into being wizards, and horrible things happen to them, like not giving them any food so they learn to create food into being. This 'school' is run by the two brothers in time 1.
Some of the stuff I remember about the book might be off, cos I read it ages ago. I am trying to find this book to read again so I welcome any input.

This sounds like Skin Hunger by Kathleen Duey. An interesting book, very dark. I think there is now a sequel out too.
